Vivien Schmidt's Landscapes - Exhibition Opening (at the Italian Consulate)

  • Starts: 6:30 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2016
  • Ends: 9:30 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2016
Vivien Schmidt’s landscapes serve as evocations of place and time, and are intended to bring to mind artists’ renderings over the ages. In some cases, these images are post-photographic, with the re-imaging process akin to stripping away layers of old paint to uncover the masterpiece hidden beneath. But here, the artist strips away layers of the real landscape to reveal artists’ depictions of places that seem familiar. In other cases, her images tend to be hyper-real, going only slightly beyond the expected. But whether closer to the real or hyper-real, the images remain somehow ethereal, corresponding to the landscapes of our dreams. For the artist, these are the dreams of adolescence, when she lived in Italy, and grew up among these perennial landscapes, both rural and urban.
