Lt Gen Jack Weinstein speaks at Brandeis University

This past Friday, January 30, Lt Gen Jack Weinstein, USAF (Ret), Professor of the Practice of International Security at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, participated in a panel at Brandeis University hosted by the Center for German and European Studies in an event named Greenland, the EU, NATO, and Transatlantic Relations Today. In addition to Professor Weinstein on the panel was Jytte Klausen, the Lawrence A. Wien Professor of International Cooperation at Brandeis University and an Affiliate at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University; and Jan-Werner Mueller, the Roger Williams Straus Professor of Social Sciences at Princeton.

During this discussion, Weinstein reflected on his time stationed in Greenland from 1997–1998 as the operations lead for the 12th Space Warning Squadron at Thule Air Base (renamed Pituffik Space Base in 2023); the challenges of living 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle; Greenland’s strategic importance to the defense of North America; the enduring significance of the NATO alliance; and the 1951 U.S.–Danish Agreement granting the United States the right to expand its military presence in Greenland. Jack Weinstein, Lieutenant General, USAF (Ret), served in the U.S. Air Force from 1982 to 2018. Prior to arriving at the Pardee School of Global Studies, he was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration, Headquarters United States Air Force, the Pentagon. In this position, he was responsible to the Secretary and Chief of Staff on all aspects of nuclear deterrence operations providing direction, guidance, integration, and advocacy regarding the nuclear deterrence mission of the U.S. Air Force and engaged with joint, interagency, and NATO to develop nuclear enterprise solutions.
