Heine Interviewed on Globalization and Impact of China’s BRI

In an appearance on CGTN‘s “Global Thinkers,” Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, discussed China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the opportunities it has created for the Global South.

In the modern wave of globalization, it was believed that the United States and Europe would benefit the greatest; however, Heine notes that it is these countries who have actually retreated most from globalization and erected a number of barriers dampening free trade. China and many Latin American and African countries on the other hand are strong proponents of free trade. Heine argues that China’s BRI has been integral in bolstering the economies of the Global South, and he says while the G7 tries to play catch up, the future lies with BRI.
