Heine Explores Prospect of Argentina Joining BRICS

In a newly penned blog published by the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program, Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, discusses the prospect of Argentina joining the economic bloc made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa: the BRICS.

In the piece, titled “Argentina and the BRICS: Port in a Storm or Geopolitical Launching Pad,” Heine outlines how BRICS membership would benefit Argentina, giving it a leg up in the international hierarchy and increasing room for diplomatic maneuver. He argues that by considering BRICS membership, Argentina is applying the principles of “active non-alignment” in its foreign policy. In closing, Heine states “as a member of the BRICS, it would take this one step further, joining forces with countries that are reshaping global affairs.”
