Heine Offers Insights Into China’s COVID-19 Diplomacy

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared on the American University Center for Latin American and Latino Studies’ (CLALS) China Messaging Podcast to discuss China’s COVID-19 diplomacy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Francisco Urdinez, Associate Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and CLALS Director Eric Hershberg also offered comments on the program. The three discussed the delivery of medical supplies and sale of Chinese vaccines to Latin America, China’s goals for this diplomacy, and its relative success in achieving them. Heine specifically discussed China’s strategy in Latin America and his argument that countries in the region should adopt a strategy of active non-alignment in the international system.
