Heine Quoted on Chinese Influence in Argentina and Latin America At Large
Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was interviewed for a Clarín article on Argentine President Alberto Fernández’s visit to China and its likely impact on the country’s ongoing debt negotiations with the International Monetary Funds (IMF).
The article, titled “En Estados Unidos ven la gira de Alberto Fernández como un avance de China en Argentina (In the United States, they see Alberto Fernández ‘s tour as a gain for China in Argentina),” examines President Fernández’s visits to Russia and China as well as the worry among some United States leaders that over China’s growing influence in Latin America. Fernández has spoken of cutting off Argentina’s dependency on the U.S. and the IMF, which has been viewed as a provocation. Heine argues that Argentina’s negotiations with China actually strengthen its hand with the IMF and present alternatives to Washington’s demands. The full article can be read on Clarín‘s website.
