Pardee School Alumni Nominated to be U.S. Ambassador to Malawi

On August 4, 2021, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies alumni David John Young (STH ’87, Pardee ’88) to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Malawi.

Young’s nomination was one of many national security positions announced by the White House. The statement said the following of the Pardee School alumni:

Young, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia. Previously he served as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. Prior to that, he was Deputy Director, Office of the Special Envoy for Sudan & South Sudan, and he also served as Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs at the State Department. Among his other assignments, Young was a Pearson Fellow; a Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala; and Director, Office of International Religious Freedom in the Bureau of Democracy and Human Rights at the State Department.
