Heine Publishes Op-Ed on COVID Impacts in Latin America

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published an op-ed in Global Times analyzing the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had in Latin America and how it overlaps with the region’s social and economic crisis.

In the article, titled “China and the prospects for Latin American recovery,” Heine discusses the rippling effects COVID-19 has had on Latin America and how the region has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. Social, public health, and economic crises plague the region, but there has been some hope as trade between Latin America and China has picked up this year. That being said, Heine argues there is still much to be learned before the region can tackle the triple crisis beating down its door.

An excerpt:

A major rethink on how the region approaches its development and its links with the rest of the world is long overdue…If there is a silver lining to this once-in-a-century crisis in Latin America, it is that it might trigger at least some of these long overdue changes in a region once again buffeted by tragedy and mayhem.
