ASC Hosts Reception, Alumni Lecture

The African Studies Center, an affiliated regional center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a welcome reception and alumni lecture for faculty, students and friends on September 15, 2016.

Coinciding with Alumni Weekend at Boston University, the African Studies Center hosted their inaugural Bradford Morse Alumni Lecture. The lecture was delivered by African Studies Center alumnus, Peter Alegi. Alegi, currently a Professor of History at Michigan State University, delivered a lecture entitled “African Sport: Colonialism, Independence, Globalization.”

Following the alumni lecture, the African Studies Center hosted their annual Fall Reception — this year featuring the center’s take on a traditional goat roast. The reception provided current students, alumni, and friends of the center to reconnect and network.

Fallou Ngom, Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Boston University, was recently appointed as the new director of the African Studies Center — succeeding Prof. Timothy Longman at the position.

Founded in 1953, the African Studies Center has provided a strong foundation in African studies to generations of university professors, economists, health workers, government officials, development personnel, diplomats, and numerous others. The African Studies Center offers a rigorous academic program to students pursuing degrees in a variety of fields. Over 90 faculty and researchers in 20 schools and departments throughout BU are affiliated with the ASC and offer a wide range of courses with significant Africa content. Undergraduates can earn a Minor in African Studies or a Minor in African Languages & Literature. Graduate students can earn a Certificate in African Studies while completing a master’s or doctorate.
