Menchik Interviewed on the Future of Pluralism in Indonesia

Jeremy Menchik, Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Fredrick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on what protests against Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama following his defeat in a recent election by Anies Rasyid Baswedan, a former education minister, mean for pluralism in Indonesia. 

Menchik was quoted in a May 4, 2017 article in Sport News City entitled “2-year Probation Sought for Jakarta Governor.

Protests by hardliners against Purnama have left many “concerned about the future of pluralism in Indonesia”, said Jeremy Menchick, an assistant professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, whose book Islam and Democracy in Indonesia: Tolerance without Liberalism was published a year ago.

Jeremy Menchik’s research interests include comparative politics, religion and politics, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. He is also the author of Islam and Democracy in Indonesia: Tolerance Without Liberalism. At Boston University he is a member of the graduate faculty of political science and coordinates the MAIA program with specialization in Religion and International Affairs.
