Anderson in Boston Globe: Higher Education in Beirut

AUB

Betty Anderson, Director of the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations, at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, says new competitor universities are unable to match the intellectual climate of the American University of Beirut.

Anderson was quoted in a March 13, 2016 article in The Boston Globe entitled “Institutional Knowledge in Lebanon.

From the text of the article:

“It’s always been a real crossroads,” said Betty S. Anderson, a historian at Boston University whose 2011 history of AUB remains the definitive study of the school.

But it is still a draw because none of its new competitor universities can match Beirut’s intellectual climate. “You still have academic freedom at AUB,” Anderson said. “There are red lines you can’t cross, but there is still an openness and freedom to maneuver here.”

Betty Anderson has received Fulbright and American Center for Oriental Research (ACOR) grants to conduct research in Jordan and Lebanon. At Boston University, she is a member of the Steering Committee for the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations, as well as the Institute’s advisor to the two Muslim Studies Minors and chair of the committee establishing a Master’s program in Muslim Studies.
