The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/10\/05\/pardee-center-dance-mallika-sarabhai\/\">public event<\/a> was co-hosted by the Pardee Center in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/asian\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU Center for the Study of Asia<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/core\/\">CAS Core Curriculum<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/cfa\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU School of Music<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/cfa\/theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU School of Theatre<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sph.bu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU School of Public Health<\/a>. Her visit to BU is part of a larger tour of the USA sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council and DS Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The event began with a presentation by Dr Sarabhai (view one of her<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mallika_sarabhai.html\"> recent performances at a TED meeting, here<\/a>), who talked about her work around the world, especially in India, that addressed societal injustices. Her work has been bringing together classical arts and the call for social change. Speaking to a packed room,\u00a0Dr Sarabhai discussed why she decided to use dance and other art forms to bring about social change. During her presentation, Dr Sarabhai also showed the audience video clips of her various performances.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6871 alignleft\" title=\"Sarabhai-Arts-w\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2010\/10\/Sarabhai-Arts-w-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pardee Center to co-host event on the role of dance and music in social change\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2010\/10\/Sarabhai-Arts-w-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2010\/10\/Sarabhai-Arts-w.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Her presentation was followed by a panel conversation with\u00a0 Prof. Benjam\u00edn E. Ju\u00e1rez, Dean of the Boston University College of Fine Arts, Prof. Andr\u00e9 de Quadros of the Boston University School of Music, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/experts\/staff\/adil-najam\/\">Prof. Adil Najam<\/a>, Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center and Pardee Professor of Global Public Policy. The panel discussion &#8211; which included a lively Q&amp;A session with the audience &#8211; focused specially on\u00a0ways to use the arts to inspire and engage the citizenry; ways to use the arts to challenge the injustices and status quo in society; and the role of the arts and institutions in facilitating social change and public education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mallikasarabhai.com\/\">Mallika Sarabhai<\/a> is one of India\u2019s leading choreographers and dancers, creating and performing both classical and contemporary works. She has a PhD in organisational behaviour and has been the co-director of the prestigious arts institution, <a href=\"http:\/\/darpanaacademy.blogspot.com\/\">Darpana Academy<\/a> of Performing Arts, for nearly 30 years. She first came to international notice when she played the role of Draupadi in Peter Brook\u2019s The Mahabharata for 5 years, first in French and then English, performing in France, North America, Australia, Japan and Scotland. Always an activist for societal education and women\u2019s empowerment, Mallika began using her work for change. In 1989 she created the first of her hard-hitting solo theatrical works, <em>Shakti: The Power of Women<\/em>.
