The authors&#8217; conference was part of a research project of the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, being led by Pardee Center Faculty Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/alfredo-burlando\/susan-eckstein\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Susan Eckstein<\/a> and Pardee Center Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/\/adil-najam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Adil Najam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This conference brought together project participants who presented their papers and discussed each other&#8217;s papers. The final output of the project is expected to be an edited book containing these papers.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting began with an overview paper from <strong>Alejandro Portes<\/strong> of Princeton University. This was followed by presentations on the Philippines by\u00a0<strong>Rhacel Parrenas<\/strong> (Brown University), on Mozambique by\u00a0<strong>Victor Agadjanian<\/strong> (Arizona State University), on Mexico by <strong>David\u00a0Fitzgerald<\/strong> (University of California, San Diego), on Cuba by\u00a0<strong>Susan Eckstein<\/strong> (Boston University), on El Salvador by <strong>Jose Cruz<\/strong> (Vanderbilt University), on Ukraine by <strong>Cinzia Solari<\/strong> (University of California, Berkeley), on Vietnam by <strong>Hung Cam Thai<\/strong> (Pomona College), on Turkey by\u00a0<strong>Riva Kastoryano<\/strong> (Sciences\u2013Po, France), on China by <strong>Min Ye<\/strong> (Boston University), on India by <strong>Kyle Eischen<\/strong> (University of California, Santa Cruz) and on Pakistan by <strong>Adil Najam<\/strong> and <strong>Nabeela Ahmed<\/strong> (Boston University).<\/p>\n<p>Participants discussed the social, economic, cultural, and political effects diasporas in different regions of the world have on the country they originally came from.<\/p>\n<p>The conference program and list of participants\u00a0are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2009\/09\/07\/immigration-development-impacts\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Experts from a variety of disciplines and from around the world met at Pardee House on Friday, September 25, 2009, to present at a conference on\u00a0How Migrants Impact their Homelands.
