Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future is pleased to announce a Parde House Seminar titled\u00a0<em>The Urban Century: Local Challenges, Global Matters. <\/em>The seminar\u00a0will be held at the Pardee Center on <strong>Thursday, December 13, 2012<\/strong>. Featured speakers include Pardee Faculty Fellow Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/nathan-phillips\/\">Nathan Phillips<\/a>, (Earth and Environment, BU), Faculty Fellow Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/susan-eckstein\/\">Susan Eckstein<\/a> (Sociology. BU), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/steven-strauss\/\">Steven Strauss<\/a>, former Managing Director for New York City Center for Economic Transformation.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/pardee-fellows\/paul-mcmanus\/\">Faculty Fellow Paul McManus<\/a>, Director of the Sustainable Neighborhood Lab at Boston University will moderate.<\/p>\n<p>The Seminar will be held at Pardee House, 67 Bay State Road, on\u00a0<strong>December 13, 2012 <\/strong>from noon to 1:30 p.m<strong>. <\/strong> (Lunch will be available from 11.30am, seminar starts at 12.00pm). Please RSVP by\u00a0<strong>December 10th<\/strong> by registering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/december-13-pardee-house-seminar\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/The-Urban-Century-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/The-Urban-Century--1024x792.jpg\" alt=\"The Urban Century\" title=\"The Urban Century\" class=\"aligncenter\" height=\"366\" width=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/pardee-fellows\/paul-mcmanus\/\">Paul McManus<\/a> is an Executive-in-Residence at the School of Management at Boston University and the Executive Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/energy\/sustainable_neighborhood\/\">Sustainable Neighborhood Lab<\/a> (SNL), a unique living laboratory engaging academics, industry, government and citizens as partners in ground breaking cross-disciplinary research and programs in urban innovation. In addition, McManus is Managing Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/itec\/\">Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization<\/a> (ITEC).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/nathan-phillips\/\">Nathan Phillips<\/a> is an Associate Professor of Earth and Environment at Boston University. He studies cities in an interdisciplinary research program called \u201cUrban Metabolism\u201d supported by the National Science Foundation and Boston University\u2019s Sustainable Neighborhood Laboratory. The basis of his research is on\u00a0physiological mechanisms that regulate water, carbon, and energy exchanges between plants\/ecosystems and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/susan-eckstein\/\">Susan Eckstein<\/a> is a Professor\u00a0of Sociology at Boston University and a\u00a0specialist on urbanization, immigration, poverty, rights and injustices, and social movements in the context of developing countries. She has also written on agrarian reform, comparative development, and the effects of revolution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/steven-strauss\/\">Steven Strauss<\/a> is the former head of economic development strategy for NYC. \u00a0He was one of NYC&#8217;s leads for Applied Sciences NYC, the new Cornell engineering campus in NYC. \u00a0He is a 2012 Advanced Leadership Fellow at Harvard University, and was a strategy consultant for McKinsey where he served clients in America, Europe and the Middle East.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Frederick S.
