{"id":14070,"date":"2012-11-19T14:45:37","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T19:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/?p=14070"},"modified":"2012-11-19T14:45:37","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T19:45:37","slug":"global-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2012\/11\/19\/global-conversation\/","title":{"rendered":"Pardee Faculty Fellow Was Panelist in Nov. 15  \u201cGlobal Conversation\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/DSC_0671.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"292\" height=\"227\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/DSC_0671-385x300.jpg\" alt=\"Muhamad Zaman \" title=\"Muhamad Zaman \" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/DSC_0671-385x300.jpg 385w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/11\/DSC_0671-1024x797.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a>Pardee Faculty Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/muhammad-zaman\/\">Muhammad Zaman<\/a> took part in a lunchtime \u201cGlobal Conversation\u201d on Thursday, Nov. 15 as part of a program of activities organized by BU Global Programs to celebrate International Education Week (IEW), Nov.\u00a0 12-16.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Zaman was joined by\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cghd\/about-us\/people\/donald-thea\/\">Prof. Don Thea<\/a> (Center for Global Health &amp; Development) and <a href=\"http:\/\/sph.bu.edu\/index.php?option=com_sphdir&amp;id=239&amp;Itemid=340&amp;INDEX=755\">Prof. Susie Foster<\/a> (School of Public Health), who is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/pardee-advisory-board\/\">Pardee Faculty Advisory Board<\/a>, in a discussion on \u201cThe Role of a University in Creating Practitioners of Global Development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The panelists discussed current Boston University graduate programs in public health and engineering that are designed to ensure students get field experience working in developing countries, which all three stressed is a critically important part of education in global health and engineering and technology programs.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Zaman noted BU\u2019s active involvement with \u201cEngineers Without Borders\u201d as a means for students getting field experience, while Prof. Thea discussed the requirement for all master\u2019s in public health candidates focusing on global health issues to spend time working in Zambia as part of an ongoing BU research program there.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Foster described the need to make sure that students planning careers in public health in developing countries are prepared to handle situations they will find on the ground, such impassable roads, inadequate medical supplies, and lack of access to communications technologies that we take for granted here. \u00a0\u201cIt can be a real struggle,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is hard to imagine, unless you\u2019ve seen it.\u201d\u00a0 She added that she hopes such field work helps created \u201cglobal citizens\u201d as well as well-prepared public health practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Global Programs, co-sponsors of this event included the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cghd\/\">Center for Global Health &amp; Development.<\/a> The session took place at the BU Castle.<\/p>\n<p>International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, was designed to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. During IEW, several programs and activities showcased BU\u2019s myriad global dimensions.
