Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future sponsored a day-long workshop called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/task-force-meeting-and-gaming-session-games-for-a-new-climate\/\">\u201cGames for a New Climate\u201d<\/a> on Tuesday, March 27.\u00a0 Held at Barristers Hall at the Boston University Law School, the event was co-sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentre.org\/\">Red Cross\/Red Crescent Climate Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Boston University and elsewhere joined members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/task-force-meeting-and-gaming-session-games-for-a-new-climate\/\">Pardee Center Task Force on Games for a New Climate<\/a> to play a series of highly interactive games.\u00a0 The featured games at the workshop were designed specifically to help participants understand the complex issues facing citizens and decision-makers as seasonal precipitation patterns and the frequency of extreme events such as floods and droughts are becoming less predictable because of the changing climate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment12010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment12010\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Game-Session-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12010  \" title=\"Game Session 2\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Game-Session-2-650x181.jpg\" alt=\"Game Session 2\" width=\"535\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment12010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pablo Suarez lead the group through an interactive introduction and discussion of the role and use of games. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The workshop was led by Pardee Center Visiting Research Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/pablo-suarez\/\">Pablo Suarez<\/a>, in collaboration with members of the Task Force.\u00a0 The event featured a total of five games on topics ranging from whether and how farmers in developing countries can use insurance programs as a means of addressing chronic food insecurity to how contractors bidding on municipal infrastructure projects may have to consider changing long-term probability forecast for floods (e.g. an increased risk of a 10-year flood event) in developing their bids for roads and bridges. One game pitted \u201chumans versus mosquitoes\u201d in relation to controlling the risk of Dengue fever.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment12021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment12021\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Games-Session-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12021 \" title=\"Games Session 3\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Games-Session-3-650x168.jpg\" alt=\"Games Session 3\" width=\"535\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Games-Session-3-650x168.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Games-Session-3-1024x266.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Games-Session-3.jpg 1593w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment12021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pardee Director ad interim James McCann plays and discusses the game, &quot;Humans versus Mosquitoes: A Game on Dengue Risk Management,&quot; with students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to taking part in the games, the participants also heard from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2012\/03\/Pardee-Task-Force.pdf\">Task Force members<\/a> about the value of interactive games as a tool for teaching about complex issues involving uncertainty and risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value of games is that they can change perceptions, behavior, attitudes and culture,\u201d said Task Force member Hassan Virji, Executive Director for Global Change System of Analysis, Research and Training (START), an international non-governmental organization working on global environmental change issues in developing countries.
