Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future brought together a series of projects related to multilateral and international institutions for the governance of sustainable development in all its aspects, including the\u00a0social, economic, and environmental. Specific issues and processes addressed by the program included climate change and climate change negotiations (<a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/2860.php\">UNFCCC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\">IPCC<\/a>), the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/csd\/csd_index.shtml\">CSD<\/a>), and global governance in general.<\/p>\n<p>Specific projects within the Global Governance for Sustainable Development program include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sustainable Development Knowledge Partnership (SDKP) and its associated Sustainable Development Insights publication series<\/li>\n<li>Governance for a Green Economy Task Force<\/li>\n<li>Arts, Media and Climate Change Perception<\/li>\n<li>Rio+20\u2014United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development<\/li>\n<li>Accountability and Implementation for Sustainable Development<\/li>\n<li>Climate Change Negotiations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/news-cms\/photos\/un-logo2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1317\" title=\"un-logo2\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/news-cms\/photos\/un-logo2.png\" alt=\"un-logo2\" width=\"181\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a>Sustainable Development Knowledge Partnership (SDKP)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/index.shtml\">UN-DSD<\/a>), the International Institute for Environment and Development (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iied.org\/\">IIED<\/a>), the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP), and the Stockholm Environment Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sei.se\/\">SEI<\/a>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/dsd_aofw_sdkp\/sdkp_index.shtml\"><em>Sustainable Development Knowledge Partnership<\/em><\/a> aims to organize the available knowledge on sustainable development in order to make it more useful for practitioners and policy makers.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its contribution to the Sustainable Development Knowledge Partnership, the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future managed, edited, and hosted a series of publications under the series title <em>Sustainable Development Insights<\/em>. The series was edited by Former Pardee Center Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/professors\/adil-najam\/\">Prof. Adil Najam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sustainable Development Insights<\/em> available issues can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/publications-library\/sustainable-dev-insights\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Governance for a Green Economy Task Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/Rio20TFC-Mar2011cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8262\" title=\"Rio20TFC Mar2011cover\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/Rio20TFC-Mar2011cover.jpg\" alt=\"Rio20TFC Mar2011cover\" width=\"187\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a>The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future convened a Task Force on \u201cGovernance for a Green Economy\u201d in preparation for the forthcoming 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The project convened a meeting of invited experts who were asked to reflect upon and discuss the following question: If the world were to construct a truly &#8220;Green Economy&#8221; over the next 20\u201340 years, what sort of global governance institutions and mechanisms would be needed to manage it? A select group of experts was asked to turn their ideas into short &#8220;think pieces,&#8221; which were published as a Pardee Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/the\\-global\\-economic\\-governance\\-initiative_v2\/publications\/green-economy\/\">Task Force Report<\/a>. The\u00a0 report was presented to the Rio+20 preparatory process as an input into its deliberations and was widely distributed at the UN and other intergovernmental fora.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arts, Media, and Climate Change Perception<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The public perception of climate change is strongly influenced by the media and the arts, including the work of filmmakers, photographers, cartoonists, etc. Climate change is a showcase for notable differences in public perception in regard to\u00a0understanding of the related climate change science, its causes, and the actions that ought to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, in cooperation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goethe.de\/ins\/us\/bos\/enindex.htm\">Goethe-Institut Boston<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kulturwissenschaften.de\/en\/home\/index.html\">Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities Essen<\/a> (KWI), organized a symposium on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/10\/19\/arts-media-climate-change\/\">Transatlantic Perceptions of Climate Change: The Role of Arts and Media<\/a> on October 18\u201319, 2010. The symposium examined the shaping of perceptions of climate change within Europe and the United States, and asked: What is the role of the media and the arts in determining this perception and enabling an appropriate response to climate change?<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the symposium, Pardee Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/miquel-munoz\/\">Dr. Miquel Mu\u00f1oz<\/a> and visiting fellow Dr. Bernd Sommer wrote an Issues in Brief paper titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/the\\-global\\-economic\\-governance\\-initiative_v2\/publications\/iib-20-climate-change\/\">Perceptions of Climate Change: The Role of Art and the Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rio+20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University has been actively promoting ideas for the Rio+20 conference since before it was formally announced. This includes hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/05\/12\/united-nations-conference-sustainable-development-governance\/\">events<\/a> at the United Nations, seminars and workshops at the Pardee House, preparing publications and working papers, and policy advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accountability and Implementation<\/strong> <strong>for Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8313\" title=\"poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e-420x300.jpg\" alt=\"poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e\" width=\"225\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e-420x300.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/poster-Rio20-Accountability-March-11-e.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>As part of Rio+20, the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University, with support from the missions to the United Nations of the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, co-hosted a special, high-level brainstorming session on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2011\/02\/28\/accountability-implementation-rio-20-governance\/\">\u201cAccountability and Implementation: The Keys to Sustainable Development\u201d<\/a> at the United Nations in New York on March 8, 2011, as a side-event at the second PrepCom meeting for the forthcoming 2012 Rio+20 conference (see another report of the event here). This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/09\/09\/iisd-pardee-accountability-geg\/\">event<\/a> drew on previous work by the Pardee Center, including a publication, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/09\/09\/iisd-pardee-accountability-geg\/\">workshop<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/09\/09\/accountability-global-governance\/\">seminar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate Change and Energy Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University is an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2009\/10\/22\/observer-organization-unfccc\/\"> accredited observer<\/a> of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, as well as of the International Renewable Energy Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2011\/04\/05\/irena\/\">IRENA<\/a>). Pardee Center members Prof. Adil Najam and Dr. Miquel Mu\u00f1oz also serve in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as Coordinating Lead Author for AR5 and Expert Reviewer for SRREN, respectively. As an observer organization, the Pardee Center contributes to such processes through the contribution of ideas, the analysis of results, and the participation of delegates.
