Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future\u2019s annual conference on Thursday, March 31 called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/development-that-works\/\"><em>Development That Works<\/em><\/a> held at the Boston University School of Management conference center.<\/p>\n<p>The all-day conference was organized by the Pardee Center in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/gdp\">Boston University Global Development <\/a>program. Members of the organizing committee for the conference, who also served as session chairs, included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ir\/faculty\/alphabetical\/gallagher\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Kevin Gallagher<\/a> (International Relations), <a href=\"http:\/\/people.bu.edu\/dilipm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Dilip Mookherjee<\/a> (Economics), <a href=\"http:\/\/sph.bu.edu\/index.php?option=com_sphdir&amp;id=239&amp;Itemid=340&amp;INDEX=6217\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Jonathon Simon<\/a> (Center for Global Health and Development) and <a href=\"..\/experts\/staff\/adil-najam\/\">Prof. Adil Najam<\/a> (Pardee Center). The conference had kicked off with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2011\/03\/30\/reception-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">reception for panelists the previous evening<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The four panels at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/development-that-works\/\" target=\"_blank\">Development that Works<\/a><\/em> conference featured thirteen leading scholars and practitioners who discussed their work related to various aspects of development based on examples and experiences from around the world. From global development policy programs by agencies such as The World Bank to local programs delivering education, health and poverty alleviation services to rural villages in Africa and Asia, the speakers highlighted the challenges of creating programs that achieve the intended results and can be sustained over time. Lively question-and-answer sessions followed each panel discussion, providing an opportunity for the many development scholars, practitioner and students in the audience to interact with the presenters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment8642\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment8642\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/development-that-works\/\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-8642\" title=\"Pardee-Development-02\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2011\/03\/Pardee-Development-02.jpg\" alt=\"Panel #2: Investing in Development that Works: Doug Balfour, Nancy MacPherson, Iqbal Quadir and Jon Simon.\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment8642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel #2: Investing in Development that Works: Doug Balfour, Nancy MacPherson, Iqbal Quadir and Jon Simon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second panel was called <strong>Investing in Development That Works <\/strong>and was chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/sph.bu.edu\/index.php?option=com_sphdir&amp;id=239&amp;Itemid=340&amp;INDEX=6217\">Jonathon Simon<\/a> (Professor of International Health &amp; Director, Center for Global Health and Development, Boston University). Speakers included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/about-us\/our-team\/nancy-macpherson\">Nancy MacPherson<\/a> (Managing Director, Evaluation, The Rockefeller Foundation), Iqbal Z. Quadir (Professor of Practice of Development &amp; Entrepreneurship, and Founder &amp; Director of The Legatum Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genevaglobal.com\/team-member\/doug-balfour\">Doug Balfour<\/a> (Chief Executive Officer, Geneva Global).
