Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future held an all-day conference on <em>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/south-south-economic-relations\/\">The Future of South-South Economic Relations<\/a>&#8216;<\/em> as part of its Africa 2060 program of research. The conference was held on Friday, September 25, 2010 at the Hariri Building (BU School of Management) and brought together experts from a variety of fields and from across the world and an audience of some 45 to discuss different aspects of the changing landscape and the emerging dynamics of economic \u2013 and especially trade \u2013 relations amongst developing countries. The conference was preceded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2010\/09\/23\/boston-university-bu-warwick-south-reception\/\">a welcome reception for conference presenters<\/a> on Thursday, September 24.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment6666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment6666\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/research\/south-south-economic-relations\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6666 \" title=\"South-South-Economic-1\" src=\"\/pardee\/files\/2010\/09\/South-South-Economic-1.jpg\" alt=\"Panel Chair Adil Najam, Kathryn Hochstetler, Mariana Rangel Padilla, and Alcides Costa Vaz (top).\" width=\"400\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2010\/09\/South-South-Economic-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2010\/09\/South-South-Economic-1-360x300.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment6666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adil Najam, Kathryn Hochstetler, Mariana Rangel Padilla, and Alcides Costa Vaz (top).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The conference began with welcome comments from the two conveners of the conference &#8211; Pardee Center Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/professors\/adil-najam\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Prof. Adil Najam<\/strong><\/a>, and Pardee Center Research Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/rachel-thrasher\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rachel Thrasher<\/strong><\/a>. The conference was part of a larger book project of the Pardee Center and papers presented in this experts conference will be collected into an edited book on the subject, expected to be published in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The first panel was chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/professors\/adil-najam\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Prof. Adil Najam<\/strong><\/a> (Boston University). <strong>Kathryn Hochstetler<\/strong> from the University of Waterloo presented her paper on the emerging and likely impacts of increased South-South trade on the environment; the paper from <strong>Mariana Rangel Padilla<\/strong> from the Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey in Mexico focused on foreign direct investment (FDI) from developing countries and the patterns in which they are distributed around the world, including to other developing countries; and <strong>Alcides Costa Vaz<\/strong> from the University of Brasilia presented on the role of key emerging economies, including on the political aspects and explanations for the emerging trends.
