Chloe Mulderig<\/h3>\n<p>October 2011 (8 pages)<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/files\/2011\/10\/21-IIB.pdf?PDF=iib-21-youth-arab-spring\">Download PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This <em>Issues in Brief<\/em> discusses the role that youth played in \u201cthe Arab Spring\u201d of 2011 in terms of the inability of young people to progress to adulthood following traditional cultural channels and rites of passage.\u00a0 M. Chloe Mulderig, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/2011-summer-fellows\/\">2011 Pardee Graduate Summer Fellow<\/a> and Boston University doctoral candidate in anthropology who has done extensive field work in the Arab world, discusses the social, cultural, and market forces that have thrust much of a generation of Arab youth into a \u201climinal state of pre-adulthood\u201d and the implications that has for the future of Arab countries.\u00a0 \u201cThe future stability of the region requires the creation of opportunities that reintegrate youth into Arab economies, religious communities, and social networks through the achievement of adult status,\u201d she concludes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M. Chloe Mulderig <\/strong>is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Boston University and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/2011-summer-fellows\/\">2011 Pardee Graduate Summer Fellow<\/a>. She has been conducting ethnographic fieldwork throughout the Arab world since 2003, including extensive interviews with Moroccan youth during the first half of 2011.
