Dean Adil Najam Discusses “The World After Coronavirus” Video Series in Chatham House’s The World Today Article

Pardee School of Global Studies Dean Adil Najam recently discussed the importance of multidisciplinarity in international relations for an article in the Chatham House magazine, The World Today. Specifically, he focused on the lessons learned after conducting more than 100 interviews with a wide range of leading experts for the Pardee Center’s video series, “The World After Coronavirus,” exploring the myriad challenges and opportunities we will face in the future that is being created by COVID-19.

In the article, Dean Najam called the video series his “season of learning” that has altered his perception of the COVID-19 crisis and the new realities that it is creating. He also acknowledged that a ‘silo culture’ persists in academia, despite broad recognition that an interdisciplinary approach is essential for tackling real-world, global problems like the pandemic.

“Even those like myself who assume that we are interdisciplinary need to constantly challenge the limits of our own interdisciplinarity,” he said. “Because of this little pathogen we are now confronted with the necessity to break down those boundaries that we had so painstakingly constructed.”
