Faculty Research Fellow Ziming Xuan Awarded Developmental Study on Alcoholism and HIV in India

Ziming Xuan, an Associate Professor in BU’s School of Public Health and a Faculty Research Fellow at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, was recently awarded a developmental study to explore associations between alcohol use and HIV among married couples in India.

Given rising rates of alcohol consumption and HIV infection in India, the study seeks to evaluate correlations between socioeconomic conditions and HIV risk among Indian married couples, and further assess how excessive alcohol consumption affects HIV risk among these married couples.

The study is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), a joint research effort between Brown University/Lifespan and Boston University/Boston Medical Center.

The study is related to Prof. Xuan’s work as a Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellow, where he is establishing an interdisciplinary research program on the social and health issues related to alcohol use and misuse in China and India.
