Scarlet’s Finances Case Study

Scarlet is worried about how her family is going to pay for BU. One of her parents recently lost their job as a result of the slowing economy so Scarlet is concerned how this will impact her family’s plan to pay for school. Where can she go for help in understanding what she can do in this situation?

Making Friends

Scarlet’s been at BU for a few weeks now, and she feels like still hasn’t made any friends. She doesn’t really talk to anyone in her classes, and she doesn’t feel comfortable just walking up to someone to start a conversation. She’s worried that by now everyone else already has made friends. How can she meet new people?

Changing Majors

Scarlet came to BU fully prepared to major in Chemistry on the Premed track. He was great in science in high school, but now that he’s at BU, he realizes he isn’t enjoying his classes. Other people in the class seem more excited about learning this than he does. Scarlet thinks he might want to transfer to the College of Communication for Journalism, but he doesn’t know who to ask for help. Who can he talk to about these concerns?

Research Opportunities

Scarlet wants to do research on campus but doesn’t know where to look. He’s heard about something called UROP, but he doesn’t understand what that is. He really likes one of his professors but is afraid to just walk up to her and ask to do research with her. He is also wondering if there are remote research positions available in addition to the in-person opportunities. How can he look for a research position?

Service in the City of Boston

Scarlet regularly participated in community service projects before she came to BU. Now that she’s at BU, she wants to continue volunteering in the community, but she doesn’t know where she’d begin to find opportunities in a city as large as Boston. She wants to know if most students on campus volunteer and how people can manage it with rigorous course loads. What opportunities are available on campus for students like Scarlet who have a passion for community service?

Adjusting to the Courseload

Scarlet came from a small high school so large lectures are not something he is comfortable with. Unfortunately, a required course for his major is IR 999, a class with about 200 students. About four weeks into the semester, he begins to feel overwhelmed and realizes that he’s been worrying about his health with being close to so many classmates during the lectures. Scarlet is struggling to stay focused and keep up with weekly readings and materials. He feels discouraged and his grades are not what he is used to receiving. What can he do to regain confidence in himself? Who can he ask for help managing the course load?

Going out in Boston

Scarlet wants to know what she can do for fun in Boston when she’s not studying. She’s heard partying is a huge part of college and doesn’t know what else people do for fun if they’re not drinking or partying. She wants to know if there’s anything else students to do in the city if parties aren’t their thing, and how she can practice safe social distancing while exploring the city. What would you tell her?

Living Difference

When she first moved into her residence hall, Scarlet made friends with many of the other students living on her floor. A few weeks into the school year, Scarlet realizes she and her floormates are having some differences of opinion over cleanliness of the bathroom they share and noise on the floor. What should she do?

Starting a New Student Group

Scarlet was heavily involved in an organization at his previous school that does not exist at BU. He believes the university would benefit greatly from the addition of this club and wants to start a group of his own on campus. Scarlet is excited, but also worried about how he will navigate leadership of a group where hosting events and planning meetings is different from his experiences before the pandemic. Who should he contact to begin this process?

Transfer Credits

Some classes from Scarlett’s previous university weren’t approved to have an equivalent course at BU and thus aren’t fulfilling her major’s requirements. In addition, some of her classes are still waiting for an initial review. She’s confused as to how to move forward planning her schedule with these unknowns in her portfolio. Who can Scarlett contact to inquire about the review of her transfer credits? What departments can provide clarity on the best plan of action?
