Online MS in HPE

The Master of Science in Health Professions Education program is designed to help doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers, therapists and a wide range of other health professionals become experts in health professions education.

Housed in the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and taught in cooperation with the Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, this program is one of the only MS HPEd degrees in the U.S. offered in a online, in-person, and FlexPath formats incorporating regular direct synchronous teaching sessions with program faculty. This feature is especially valuable to those professionals who desire to continue to work in their health professions position and build on this experience with the guidance of skilled faculty, and is designed to integrate particularly well for those who are already engaged in teaching roles in medicine, nursing, or other health professions.

Degree Requirements

The Health Professions Education Program offers both a certificate and Master’s degree. Both program options included a set of 7 core classes and electives. The electives and individualized practicum completed under a faculty mentor allow students to gain experience in their chosen discipline.  Students have the option of taking courses part-time or full-time.  Courses are held later in the day/evening to accommodate variable schedules of clinicians.

Application Requirements

All applicants must have completed a degree in a health sciences discipline prior to enrollment.  Depending on your degree (MD, MS, BA, etc.) varying years of teaching experience is required, along with letters of recommendation, personal statement, and transcripts.  International applicants must also submit TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent examination scores demonstrating English proficiency if Bachelor’s degree was not received from an English speaking institution.

Flexible and Collaborative Learning for Health Educators

In the Health Professions Education program, you will have the opportunity to meet others from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds, and benefits from one anothers’ expertise and experience in their disciplines.  Together, you will explore traditional, innovative and best practices in curriculum development, clinical teaching, didactic delivery, research and evaluation.  Synchronous classes are typically help each week or every other week, online or in-person, with a variety of skills-based activities and module work between sessions.

In addition to the health professions-focused expertise of our GMS faculty on the medical campus, your study will be augmented with educationally-focused expertise from terrific faculty at the Wheelock College of Education & Human Development.  As an adult learner, you will be encouraged to identify work you are already engaged in professionally as the foundation for your classwork and practicum, allowing you to bring a more rigorous and robust approach to the work you do in your daily professional life.  You will receive advising and mentorship from program faculty, to augment support you might also receive from topic-specific mentors related to your practicum. 

International students can take advantage of the substantial supports at Boston University, as well as work with program faculty with deep experience in global health workforce development.  All students may also participate and take advantage of the wide range of additional enriching student opportunities on campus.

Skills You’ll Gain

The Health Professions Education program aims to develop expertise in teaching and education, specifically in Health Sciences professions. The program prepares students to emerge as leaders in education in their health sciences field.

  • Preparation Graduates are capable of preparing novel health sciences curricula specific to local needs, including competency-based goals and objectives, innovative and proven teaching methods and a variety of evaluations using measurable and meaningful learning outcomes.
  • Leadership Graduates are also capable of offering local expertise and mentorship in the classroom and clinical settings.
