Career Placement and Real-World Experience

A primary motivation for enrolling in an online degree program is gaining a competitive edge in the job market. BU online students benefit from research-driven curriculum, experiential learning opportunities, career counseling, and coursework designed to prepare them for advancement or career transitions.

Within the School of Public Health, for example, students can take Applied Public Health Practice (OM 705), a course that places learners in real-world public health settings. Courses like these help ensure graduates leave BU with the practical skills employers seek.

For 2023 Metropolitan College graduate Melissa Viator, earning an online degree directly contributed to her career advancement.

“This program led me to my current position as a data scientist at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital, where I implement machine learning models to improve the hospital’s operational efficiency and support physicians with clinical research. I am immensely happy with my investment in graduate school, as it led me to many amazing opportunities!”

Melissa credits both her peers and professors as instrumental to her success.

“The professors in the MS in Applied Data Analytics program encouraged me and my peers to explore research areas that were the most exciting and meaningful to us.”

A Sense of Belonging in a Virtual Learning Environment

BU’s online programs are designed to foster a strong sense of community, even in a virtual setting. According to an Inside Higher Ed survey, building meaningful connections can be one of the biggest challenges for online learners. BU addresses this by providing intentional support structures for virtual students.

Online learners have regular access to Learning Facilitators who offer office-hour-style academic support, along with career services tailored to online students. The Center for Career Development provides resume guidance, alumni connections, and access to career communities that help students stay motivated and engaged.
