{"id":35,"date":"2009-11-02T11:06:01","date_gmt":"2009-11-02T15:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ombuds\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2023-11-30T09:13:28","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T14:13:28","slug":"fundamental-principles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ombuds\/how-we-help\/fundamental-principles\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundamental Principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"316\" width=\"212\" alt=\"people walking down path\" src=\"\/ombuds\/files\/2009\/11\/walk.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-131 alignright\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ombudsassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Ombuds Association<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ombudsassociation.org\/assets\/IOA%20Code%20of%20Ethics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Code of Ethics<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ombudsassociation.org\/assets\/docs\/IOA_Standards_of_Practice_Oct09.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standards of Practice<\/a>, there are four fundamental principles which define the Ombuds function.<\/p>\n<h2>Confidentiality<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong> helps create a safe place for visitors to voice concerns, evaluate issues, and identify options. It is essential to the Ombuds function at Boston University. The Ombuds will not disclose the name of any individual who has visited the office or issues that were discussed with anyone outside of the Ombuds Office unless permission to do so has been given by the individual during the course of the confidential communication. The only exception to confidentiality is where the Ombuds determines that there is an imminent risk of serious harm.<\/p>\n<h2>Informality<\/h2>\n<p>All conversations with the Ombuds are considered <strong>informal <\/strong>and off-the-record.\u00a0 The Ombuds does not make decisions on behalf of the institution or override the decisions of other officials.\u00a0 The Ombuds does not maintain permanent records of confidential communication or testify or participate in formal legal grievances or complaints.\u00a0 Formal investigations and grievances are the purview of other offices.<\/p>\n<h2>Impartiality\/Neutrality<\/h2>\n<p>The Ombuds provides objective assessments of any concern brought to the office.\u00a0 As an <strong>impartial<\/strong> third-party <strong>neutral<\/strong>, the Ombuds is an advocate for equity, fair process, and the fair administration of process, but does not take sides on behalf of any individual or cause.<\/p>\n<h2>Independence<\/h2>\n<p>The ombuds reports directly to the President of Boston University.\u00a0 The Office is <strong>independent<\/strong> and is situated outside of the University\u2019s normal administrative structure to better ensure impartiality.
