{"id":333,"date":"2017-07-27T13:33:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-27T17:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ogc\/?page_id=333"},"modified":"2025-12-11T14:02:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T19:02:14","slug":"practice-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ogc\/about-us\/practice-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"Practice Opportunities for BU Law Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of the General Counsel offers students at Boston University School of Law a number of opportunities to work with attorneys in the office and participate in\u00a0a challenging, diverse and highly interesting legal practice for a large, multi-dimensional client.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In-House Counsel Fellowship Program<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Office of the General Counsel participates in BU Law&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/employers\/in-house-counsel-fellowship\/\">In-House Counsel Fellowship Program<\/a>, and since 2015, has generally hired a fellow for a one-year term, beginning in September. Working with other lawyers in the office and independently, the fellow has significant exposure to both litigation and transactional matters.\u00a0 Assignments may include\u00a0 legal research and preparation of research memoranda; review and drafting of a wide variety of contracts and other legal documents relating to University business and academic activities; drafting policies; participation in meetings involving one or more lawyers in the office and representatives of the University administration; preparation for and attendance at depositions, motions, trials and other court or agency proceedings; and other matters relevant to the office&#8217;s practice.<\/p>\n<p>As of January 1, 2026, the In-House Counsel Fellowship Program has been suspended.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Externship Program<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>The Office of the General Counsel serves as a placement site for\u00a0BU Law&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/current-students\/jd-student-resources\/experiential-learning\/externships\/\">Externship Program<\/a>, which provides second and third-year students with the opportunity to work part-time at OGC under the supervision of an attorney mentor. One or two students intern at OGC each semester. The student&#8217;s experience is supported by a required seminar at BU Law.\u00a0 The externship begins the first week of classes and students must commit to working through the last week of classes.\u00a0 Students must work a minimum of 12 hours at OGC per week, but may work more hours for additional credits based on their overall class schedule and in consultation with OGC.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Part-time Law Clerk<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Office of the General Counsel occasionally hires second or third-year BU Law students for part-time law clerk positions during the academic year.\u00a0 If you are interested in such a position, please contact Noreen Trahon at <a href=\"mailto:ntrahon@bu.edu\">ntrahon@bu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Full-Time Summer Law Clerk<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each summer, the Office of the General Counsel hires one or two BU Law students who have completed the second year of law school as full-time law clerks who work for a minimum of eleven weeks between May and September.\u00a0 The application process is run by BU\u00a0Law&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/careers\/\">Career Development and Public Service Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of the General Counsel offers students at Boston University School of Law a number of opportunities to work with attorneys in the office and participate in\u00a0a challenging, diverse and highly interesting legal practice for a large, multi-dimensional client.
