Alice Jee Memorial Travel Award presented to Greg Miller

Ph.D student Greg Miller won the prestigious Alice Jee Memorial Travel Award. The award covers the registration fee and provides a travel stipend to the 2012 IBMS Sun Valley Workshop on Musculoskeletal Biology. Greg will additionally have the opportunity to present his work and research at the poster session.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Congratulations to Chantal deBakker and David Berry receiving Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) funding for Summer 2011! David also recently received the Lutchen Fellowship. We are excited to have them working with us in the lab.

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering manuscript published

Ginu Unnikrishnan and Elise Morgan’s manuscript “A new material mapping procedure for QCT-based, continuum finite element analyses of vertebra” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.

Four abstracts to be presented at ORS 2011

Pui Leong, Lauren Hayward, Amira Hussein and John Gallagher have all had abstracts accepted for presentation at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in 2011.

Pui Leong awarded Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

Pui Leong successfully defended her thesis, “Spatial Localiation of Mechanical Cues and Cellular Responses during Bone Healing In Vivo.” and has accepted a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Bone Bioengineering at Columbia University.

Arthritis and Rheumatism manuscript accepted

Kristy Palomares’s manuscript “Transcriptional profiling and biochemical analysis of mechanically induced cartilaginous tissues” has been accepted for publication in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism.

NIH supplement awarded

A proposal to supplement our existing NIH award on Inducing Skeletal Repair by Mechanical Stimulation was funded this fall.  This supplement will allow use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic imaging (FT-IRIS) to characterize the microstructure and composition of the tissues formed via mechanical stimulation.

Daniel Bellin wins DoD Fellowship

Daniel Bellin, an undergraduate in the lab since 2007, has won a DoD National Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.  He will pursue his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University beginning this fall.

Karen Chien wins NSF fellowship

Karen Chien, an undergraduate in the laboratory since 2005, has won an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.  She will pursue her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University beginning this fall.
