I have significant family educational privilege, but I have also found that I often connect with first-gen students well in other ways, and I want to serve as an ally and better understand the experiences of my students in general. I have also worked in many other jobs before getting my PhD, including teaching after school, middle school, and high school in Boston and lots of food service, including running a seafood kitchen.
