Advocating for Yourself in Writing

  • Starts: 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2023
  • Ends: 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2023
How confident do you feel emailing your professor, advisor, dean, or potential employer? Do you freeze when you need to make an argument about why you should be placed in a higher-level class, or be considered for an internship? These situations are high-stakes, and often prompt worries about voice and register, as well as about power and status. Together, we will talk through common academic situations that require self-advocacy emails, and develop a template for writing them. This workshop is particularly useful for first years or incoming transfer students, though anyone is welcome. Bring a pen and paper, or a laptop, for some hands-on writing. Co-facilitated by Marisa Milanese, Master Lecturer, and Christina Michaud, Associate Director for ELL. Co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Writing Program.
