Boston University First-Gen College Celebration 2024
Join the Newbury Center and the entire BU community as we celebrate the achievements and experiences of our first-generation undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. While the official date for the National First-Generation College Celebration is November 8th, we’re celebrating for a whole week.
The Newbury Center and the entire BU community events:
Monday, November 4th:
- 12:00-4:00PM: National First-Gen College Celebration (George Sherman Union Metcalf Hall Ballroom, 2nd Floor, 775 Commonwealth Ave) The entire BU community (students, faculty, and staff) is invited to take part in this event–fun activities like writing 1,000 notes of encouragement, games, Research Poster Showcase, create a first-gen mural, and giveaways like Terrier F1RSTS swag AND Convenience Points, and LOTS OF FREE FOOD!

- 5:00-6:00PM: Resume Workshop for First-Year Students (100 Bay State Road, 6th Floor) Craft a resume that will help you get noticed for internships, jobs and leadership opportunities. Learn how to leverage the resources at the Center for Career Development for successful professional development. This program will include an overview of the CCD’s Identity-Based Resources. This workshop is designed for first-year undergraduate students, but all are welcome! Workshop led by CCD staff and counts towards FYE rewards as part of the FY101 program. This is an in-person workshop on the 6th floor of the Yawkey Center for Student Services (100 Bay State Road). Be sure to check-in at the 6th floor desk when you arrive. REGISTER HERE on Handshake!
- 4:30-6:00PM: Women’s Basketball vs Northeastern (Case Gym, 285 Babcock St) Join your Terriers as the tip-off the basketball season in their home opener against Northeastern at Case Gym – The Roof! FREE food, giveaways, music and more! Be sure to wear your BU Newbury Center t-shirt or your Terrier F1RSTS buttons so you can spot other first-gen students at the game! Students who have the BU Sports Pass can get in with their BU ID. No sports pass? No problem! Space is limited, so REGISTER to reserve a ticket! Go Terriers!

Tuesday, November 5th:
- 12:30-2:00 pm: Terrier F1RSTS Tuesday for Graduate & Professional Student (Instructional Building, L201 (2nd Floor), 72 E Concord St., Boston University Medical Campus) Join us at the Boston University Medical Campus for a special Terrier F1RSTS Tuesday to recognize First-Generation College Celebration Week. Food will be served so make sure you register ahead of time! Special giveaways.
Wednesday, November 6th:
- 4-5pm: Advocating for Yourself in Writing (Yawkey Center, 100 Bay State Road) Join us and learn how to become more confident when writing to advocate for yourself!
- 5-6pm: First-gen Support Group (Marsh Chapel, Thurman Room, 735 Commonwealth Ave) This group offers a safe and supportive space for students who identify as first generation. Topics discussed may include navigating unfamiliar situations, balancing academics with social life, managing responsibilities and finances, and processing feelings, such as excitement, guilt, shame, confusion and pride. The group emphasizes building community supports and sharing resources.
- 5:30-6:30PM: First-Gen Study Abroad Panel (School of Theology, B24, Community Room, 745 Commonwealth Ave) The Study Abroad office will be hosting a first-gen study abroad panel highlighting the experience of first-gen students who have participated in a variety of study abroad programs during their time at BU.
Thursday, November 7th:
- 12:00-1:00PM: Seeking and Belonging: Navigating Faith and Religious Identity (735 Commonwealth Ave, Marsh Chapel Thurman Room) College can be a time filled with exploring both new and old facets of our identity and sense of belonging as we encounter new people, ideas, and ways of life. Join Marsh Chapel & Religious Life for a conversation exploring both the role and challenges of faith, spirituality, and religious identity in the midst of college life. Open to any student who finds themself with more questions than answers!
- 6-7:30PM: Tri-Alpha National Honor Society Induction Ceremony (By Invitation Only–Livestream will be available)
Friday, November 8th:
- 9-11AM: Fuel-Up Friday (STH Community Room, B24, 755 Commonwealth Ave)
- 3:00-5:00PM: Women’s Ice Hockey vs Merrimack (925 Commonwealth Ave, Agganis Area) Join your Terrier women’s ice hockey as they faceoff against Merrimack at Agganis Arena! REGISTER to reserve a ticket! Go Terriers!
