Cafeteria<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>Charlestown, MA 02129<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>About this month\u2019s topic:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Complementary and integrative healthcare (CIH) is a healthcare approach that includes <strong>complementary medicine<\/strong> (used together with conventional medicine), <strong>alternative medicine<\/strong> (used in place of conventional medicine) and <strong>integrative health<\/strong> (using complementary and alternative therapies in conjunction with conventional therapies). \u00a0CIH approaches are usually separated into two groups: <strong>PRODUCTS<\/strong>, including herbs, vitamins, minerals, and cannabis; and <strong>PRACTICES<\/strong>, which include yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage. \u00a0CIH can be helpful in treating secondary conditions that are common in people with SCI, including pain, bowel and bladder health, and depression. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Attendees will be able to:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn about the many types of Complementary &amp;\u00a0Integrative Healthcare options that are potentially helpful for people with SCI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn about\u00a0previous and current clinical trials involving\u00a0<span>Complementary &amp;\u00a0Integrative Healthcare<\/span>\u00a0and people with SCI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn how to critically evaluate the potential usefulness of Complementary &amp; Integrative Healthcare for their own situations, and how to approach their medical providers if interested in trying CIH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">About Our Speaker:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Jennifer Coker, MPH,<\/strong>\u00a0has been a Research Associate at Craig Hospital since April 2012 and works primarily with the SCI Model Systems projects. She\u00a0is Principal Investigator for the current SCI Model Systems module project, \u201cUtilization of Complementary and Integrative Healthcare to Treat Pain in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury\u201d and a Craig H Neilsen Foundation-funded project, \u201cA Bridge from Rehabilitation to Real-World: Reinventing Yourself after SCI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Coker has\u00a0worked in the field of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) since 1997. \u00a0She obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in May 2001 where she won the James W. Alley Award for Outstanding Service to Disadvantaged Populations. \u00a0Ms. Coker\u00a0is currently a PhD student in the Clinical Sciences program at the University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus. \u00a0She has presented research at national conferences of the American Spinal Injury Association, the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Psychologists and Social Workers (now the Academy of SCI Professionals), the American Public Health Association, and the American Psychological Association. \u00a0In addition, Ms. Coker has won several awards for research presentations and publications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craig Hospital<\/strong> in Denver, Colorado is a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that specializes in the neuro-rehabilitation and research of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). \u00a0Craig has been designated as a Spinal Cord Injury Model System center since 1974; current Model Systems research focuses on the use of statins to reduce bone loss after SCI and the utilization of Complementary and Integrative Healthcare in people with SCI.<\/p>\n<p>__________________<\/p>\n<p>Support Group Meetings (Boston)<br \/>\nThere will be a Greater Boston Chapter of the United Spinal Association\u00a0peer support group meeting beginning at 5:00 PM. \u00a0A family support group will also begin at 5:00 PM.
