On July 23, the World Health Organization deemed the virus a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/23-07-2022-who-director-general-declares-the-ongoing-monkeypox-outbreak-a-public-health-event-of-international-concern\" target=\"_blank\">Public Health Emergency of International Concern<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(PHEIC). Governors in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/states-cities-declared-states-of-emergency-over-monkeypox-outbreaks-2022-8\" target=\"_blank\">New York, California, and Illinois<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>have followed the WHO\u2019s lead, while the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/policy-watch\/monkeypox-vaccine-roll-out-in-the-u-s-are-jurisdictions-requesting-all-their-doses\/\" target=\"_blank\">demand for vaccine doses continues to outpace supply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Endemic to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385\" target=\"_blank\">central and western Africa<\/a>, the virus is known for popping up on the international radar from time to time, even as<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/outbreak\/us-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\">recently as 2021<\/a>. But<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/23\/who-declares-spreading-monkeypox-outbreak-a-global-health-emergency.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general<\/a>, described the 2022 surge as \u201can outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/massachusetts-identifies-first-2022-us-case-monkeypox-infection-2022-05-18\/\" target=\"_blank\">shortly after the United States confirmed its first case<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Brink<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/how-worried-should-we-be-about-monkeypox\/\" target=\"_blank\">discussed the properties of the virus with John H. Connor<\/a>, a virologist at Boston University\u2019s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) and a School of Medicine associate professor of microbiology.
