By Lindsay Moran<\/p>\n<div class=\"text section\">\n<p>As someone with a background in intelligence, I\u2019m accustomed to helping people understand the gravest national security threats our nation faces. But I\u2019ll admit to being as confused as anyone during the latest outbreak of the Ebola virus, which instantly crippled the American psyche \u2013 sowing fear and panic in a matter of hours, just like acts of terrorism possess the capacity to do.<\/p>\n<p>So I was both excited \u2013 and admittedly a little apprehensive \u2013 when TechKnow asked me to visit Boston University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/neidl\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories<\/a> (the NEIDL) \u2013 where Ebola and other deadly pathogens will soon be quarantined for study and research. \u00a0While the NEIDL had yet to \u201cgo hot\u201d \u2013 that is, become host to these lethal diseases \u2013 during the time of our visit, it will be fully operational this year as a Biosafety Level 4 (or BSL-4) lab.
