Wayne Budd to serve on Biosafety Lab Committee

(Boston) – Boston University Medical Center announced today that Wayne Budd, a highly-respected attorney and community leader, has agreed to serve on the Executive Committee of the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories Institute (NEIDL Institute). Mr. Budd, a resident of Boston, has been selected to fill the public member-at-large position. The Executive Committee will advise the Director of the NEIDL Institute on the scientific research and operational activities of the Biosafety Lab.
Mr. Budd is a senior counsel in the Litigation Department of Goodwin Procter LLP where he specializes in business and commercial litigation. Mr. Budd had previously been a partner at Goodwin Procter from 1993 to 1996.
Mr. Budd has served as Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel at John Hancock Financial Services Inc., and as Group President-New England at Bell Atlantic Corporation (now Verizon Communications).
Before entering the private sector, Mr. Budd had been Associate Attorney General of the United States. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Budd was the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, serving as the state’s chief federal prosecutor and representing the federal government in all matters involving civil litigation. During this time, he was recognized for his efforts in combating drugs, street crime and gang violence. Mr. Budd has also served as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
The Executive Committee of the NEIDL Institute is composed of the Associate Directors of the NEIDL, the Provost of the Medical Campus (or a designee) the CEO of Boston Medical Center (or a designee) and a public member- at -large
In addition, BUMC has announced the formation of the Community Liaison Committee (CLC) that will become part of the NEIDL Institute. The committee will facilitate public participation in the Biosafety Lab. The CLC will be comprised of six committee members who are not employed by Boston University or Boston Medical Center.
The committee’s tasks will include reviewing the projects and activities of the NEIDL and assisting the director and other committees as needed to ensure effective communication on programs and activities involving the NEIDL and the community. BUMC will solicit nominations for the CLC in the next few weeks.
