Jews, Zionists, and Jerusalem: Documents 1917-1947

The Jewish community of Jerusalem had been growing since the end of the 19th-century and, by the 1930's, attained the majority in the city with its bustling developments beyond the Ottoman walls. Under the Mandate, Zionists consider Jerusalem an important symbol of national history but not an essential aspect of their practical and strategic goal of creating a national home, symbolized by the newly founded city of Tel Aviv and the collective settlements in the Galilee. At crucial junctions, the leadership can therefore be deliberately vague about its intentions for the future of the Holy City.
