{"id":5362,"date":"2020-02-21T16:40:06","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T21:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/missiology\/?p=5362"},"modified":"2025-07-21T15:57:30","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T19:57:30","slug":"willard-frances-1939-1898","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/missiology\/2020\/02\/21\/willard-frances-1939-1898\/","title":{"rendered":"Willard, Frances (1939-1898)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Doing Justice: Women\u2019s Suffrage, Workers\u2019 Rights, Anti-Child Labor Efforts<\/h3>\n<p>Courageous Methodist women, such as Anna Howard Shaw and Frances Willard, were leaders in the struggles for women\u2019s suffrage and worker rights, including efforts against child labor.<\/p>\n<p>In 1904 Ms. Shaw became president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She also pressed for women\u2019s right to serve as voting delegates to the Methodist Episcopal Church General Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Frances Willard was president of the Woman\u2019s Christian Temperance Union, the largest women\u2019s organization in the United States at the time with 150,000 members.
