\nThese are the committee minutes dealing mostly with the United Brethren in Christ\u2019s mission work in Sierra Leone, the denomination\u2019s major mission field in Africa.<\/li>\n

\nThis society was organized in Pittsburgh in 1879 and worked autonomously but in cooperation with the Board of Missions.\u00a0 It existed to unite the women of the Methodist Protestant Church in efforts to promote and extend the organized work of missions.<\/li>\n
\nThis was the agency responsible for sending out foreign missionaries.\u00a0 From 1834 until 1877 it was called Board of Foreign Missions, and from 1877-1888 it was named Board of Missions.\u00a0 From 1888 until 1924 it was again called Board of Foreign Missions.<\/li>\n
\nThis agency carried out the work of domestic missions within the bounds of the United States and its territories, except for those missions under the control of the Annual Conferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n
\nThis was the agency created by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to manage the denomination\u2019s missionary activity.\u00a0 The board meeting minutes run from 1866 until 1942, when the Methodist Episcopal Church, South officially merged with the Methodist Church.<\/li>\n

\nThe Missionary Society was organized in 1819. Its purpose was to aid the Annual Conferences in their benevolent and charitable work in both domestic and foreign missions.\u00a0 The Society administered its work through a Board of Managers, subject to the General Missionary Committee.<\/li>\n
\nThe Missionary Society was reorganized in 1906 and changed its name to the Board of Foreign Missions.\u00a0 Its objectives were religious and philanthropic, designed to share the Christian faith through promotion and support of Christian Missions and educational institutions in foreign countries.<\/li>\n

\nThis magazine resulted from the merger of Woman\u2019s Work for Woman with Our Mission Field in December 1885 and was in production to 1924.<\/li>\n

\nThe Church Missionary Society was founded in 1799 as an independent voluntary society within the Church of England, whose aim was to send missionaries to \u201cthe continent of Africa and other parts of the heathen world\u201d.\u00a0 CMS missionaries spread the gospel not only through evangelistic work but through education and medical care, by providing schools for children, colleges for adults, training in industry for men, and in crafts and household skills for women and medical training for those who worked in the hospitals and dispensaries.<\/p>\n\n

\nWomen missionaries played a crucial role in the activities of the CMS and their records appear throughout the CMS Archive.\u00a0 This section concentrates on Missions to Women, both educational and evangelical.<\/p>\n\n
\nThe FES archive consists of Minutes, Finance and General Papers, Annual Reports and a Name Index.<\/li>\n
\nLooking East at India\u2019s Women and China\u2019s Daughters, 1940-1957 <\/strong>(19 reels)
\nThis illustrated magazine of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society includes information on India\u2019s women and their lives as well as a record of CMS work, shedding much light on the interaction between the local women and the missionaries.<\/li>\n
\nBegun in 1885 as a magazine for the young people of the CEZMS schools, who joined the Daybreak Workers\u2019 Union, it contains articles on missionaries, schools and work in India, China and Ceylon; The Indian Female Evangelist, 1872-1880<\/strong>. (6 reels)<\/li>\n\n
\nThe first CMS mission was to Sierra Leone, a colony established by Britain for freed slaves.\u00a0 Samuel Crowther, the first African Anglican bishop, was largely educated in a CMS school and played a vital role in the missions to Sierra Leone and Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n
