Cisco Jabber Softphone

A softphone is a software program for making telephone calls over the Internet using a general-purpose computer rather than dedicated hardware. The softphone can be installed on a desktop, laptop, or mobile device and allows the user to place and receive calls without requiring an actual telephone set.
BU offers Cisco Jabber Remote Agent as a client for BU softphones.

To request a softphone for your department please submit a request to metit@bu.edu including the following information: First Name, Last Name, Office phone #, Email address.

Warning: Cisco Jabber should not be used for emergency calls. Dialing 911 through Cisco Jabber will not provide emergency personnel with your correct location. Please use a cellphone or landline when calling 911.

Getting started

  1. Contact MET IT (metit@bu.edu or 617-358-5401) to have the software installed on your device.
  2. Plug in your headset.
  3. Log into Jabber using your username@bu.edu for first time set up (later you will only need to enter “username”) and Kerberos password.
  4. Place a test call (call MET IT HelpDesk at 617-358-5401).

Things that can impact your connections

  1. Your internet at home – if there is congestion in your network, it will impact the quality of your connection.
  2. Your headsets – make sure you have tested these and adjusted the settings so you are comfortable, and others can hear you.
