My long-term scientific interest and expertise is in developing vaccines to combat infectious and malignant diseases.

Please tell us about your work. Can you share any current research or recent publications?
I am part of a large group of researchers and clinicians studying neoantigen-targeting personalized cancer vaccines (PCV), which have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment. These personalized vaccines rely on accurate epitope prediction and selection. We previously reported phase I trials of neoantigen targeting PCV in melanoma and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

Recently we concluded a trial in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) where the neoantigen targeting PCV was immunogenic in all patients, targeted cancer drivers, and demonstrated in vitro reactivity to primary patient tumors. None of these vaccinated RCC patients had a relapse of their cancer, which was remarkable.

How does the subject you work in apply in practice? What is its application?
We develop neoantigen-targeting personalized cancer vaccines at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. These are personalized vaccines that we design for each patient using the genetic information gleaned from the patient’s own tumor. These vaccines are in clinical trials.

What course(s) do you teach at MET? What “real-life” exercises do you bring to class?
I teach Biomedical Sciences and Health IT (MET CS 570). I also developed the self-paced Medical Terminology Pre-Lab (MET HE 100).

I have a long-standing interest in T cell-based vaccines for infectious diseases. This is an overlooked aspect of immunology. I give a lecture on infectious diseases in the Biomedical Sciences course, in which I provide a lot of real-life examples. How many infectious diseases are out there ready to get us is eye-opening.

What do you consider to be the unique value being of an adjunct faculty member who maintains a strong presence in the world of field research? What does that bring to the classroom?
I am involved with a lot of cutting-edge research at Harvard Medical School, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and the Broad Institute. I provide information on very current advances in biomedicine during the course.

Can you provide examples of fruitful collaboration with full-time faculty on research activities?
I collaborate extensively with the MET Computer Science Department. We recently got an R01 grant to study Merkel cell carcinoma. Dr. Guanglan Zhang, associate professor and chair of the MET Computer Science Department, will be providing bioinformatics support for this funded study. I have other funded projects studying the rare cancers NUT carcinoma, and Lynch syndrome. My BU collaborations also benefit these projects.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Teaching graduate courses to working adults has been extremely rewarding. Our students come to the classroom with extensive real-life experience. I have learned a lot from the students.
