{"id":76063,"date":"2022-03-11T11:54:01","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T16:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/?p=76063"},"modified":"2022-03-11T11:56:44","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T16:56:44","slug":"new-class-of-urban-grape-award-winners-bring-wide-perspective-to-newest-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/news\/new-class-of-urban-grape-award-winners-bring-wide-perspective-to-newest-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"New Class of Urban Grape Award Winners Bring Wide Perspective to Newest Opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last fall, the second pair of winners of the BU Food &amp; Wine <a href=\"https:\/\/theurbangrape.shop\/pages\/wine-studies-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color<\/a> were announced: Tatiana Glenn and Victor Medina.<\/p>\n<p>As winners, Glenn and Medina are enrolled in MET\u2019s four-level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/foodandwine\/wine-programs\/#levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Certificate in Wine Studies program<\/a>, starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/foodandwine\/wine-programs\/level-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level 1: Fundamentals of Wine Studies<\/a>. They will also commence a series of paid internships designed to given them a rounded perspective on the beverage and hospitality industry: first, with Urban Grape, they will each develop their retail experience; then, they\u2019ll learn the world of wholesale via the Norwood-based major wine and spirits distributor MS Walker; they\u2019ll get insight into the hospitality side of things with the award\u2019s latest restaurant partner, Row 34; finally, the pair will work a full harvest internship with the vintners at Ross Road Custom Crush to learn all aspects of winemaking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"max-width: 450px; margin: 0 auto 1.5em; text-align: center;\"><img src=\"\/met\/files\/2022\/03\/urban-grape-winners-glenn-medina.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" alt=\"Tatiana Glenn and Victor Medina are the most recent recipients of the Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color.\" \/><span class=\"image-caption\">Tatiana Glenn and Victor Medina are the most recent recipients of the Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Urban Grape lauded Glenn and Medina in their announcement, saying, \u201cWe want to acknowledge just how far Tatiana and Victor have traveled\u2014emotionally and physically\u2014to be here with us this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glenn is a native of California\u2019s San Luis Obispo County, itself a haven for the wine trade. Her dream, she says, is to open a Black-owned winery, although as Urban Grape officials remarked, \u201cThe irony is not lost on any of us that she had to leave wine country to find access to the wine industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Mexican-born Medina, the wine business runs in the family. He discovered the rich wine history of his native country when his sister Kenya and brother-in-law Max opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toziimports.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tozi Imports<\/a>, a Woburn-based wine import company with proud ties to Urban Grape. Victor aims to use his finance background and newfound passion to help expand Tozi, and bring Mexican wine to more areas of the US.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its second year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/news\/category\/urban-grape-wine-studies-award\/\">Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color<\/a> is an effort to bring greater equity and representation to the world of wine through opportunities designed to provide direct support and mentorship in the beverage and hospitality industry.
