The MET environment is ideally positioned to enable effective testing and implementation of innovative programs and approaches within the University, specifically in the areas of (1) learning science—cognitive, social, and cultural aspects; (2) AI, computing, and data science; (3) delivery modalities; (4) educational technologies; (5) the economics of education—business models for professional education for extended career spans; (6) research focused on teaching and learning modalities and learning analytics; and (7) research and development in educational formats and business models.

Summer Pre-College Programs for Students from Traditionally Underserved Populations

Working Group Chair: Associate Director of Summer Term Amanda Kautzman
Boston University Summer Term draws from all BU schools and colleges to offer more than 700 “open enrollment” summer courses to Boston University students, visiting students from the US and abroad, working professionals, and high school students through the Summer Term Pre-College Programs—competitive and fun academic programs that highlight the BU campus environment and the city of Boston. To progressively foster a relationship between BU and high school students in Summer Term programs, we will develop a three-year “pipeline to BU” program. In concert with this, a BU Bridge Program will prepare BU-bound high school graduates for the adjustment to college academics and life.

Mentoring for Academic and Career Success

Working Group Chair: Associate Dean for Enrollment & Student Affairs Carl Sessa
To prepare students for a fast-changing workplace with myriad educational, training, and career options, it is essential to provide information, guidance, and support. MET is building an organizational framework for comprehensive advising and mentoring, from the application process through graduation, that includes career advice and job-search coaching. Importantly, we will connect students to internships, real-world projects, industry mentors, and career opportunities, while promoting faculty participation in joint industry-relevant projects as well as closer involvement in the practice of their disciplinary fields and the broader community. This holistic approach to mentoring and support will extend beyond graduation, strengthening the connections of alumni to their alma mater.

Data-Supported Program Development and Decision-Making

Working Group Chair: Assistant Dean for Analytics Dalia Yassa
MET has evolved extended analytics and data services initially used for operational management and decision-making. More recently, and in close collaboration with the faculty, the College piloted several models for program review and analysis of the competitive landscape and educational trends. We will build on this work to design and implement systematic processes for assessing and positioning our programs and identifying new areas of content development.

Sustainable Development of Research-Active, Industry-Cognizant Faculty

Working Group Chair: Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Lou Chitkushev
MET’s leading position in developing new academic curricula and pedagogy is predicated on a faculty that remains active in research and scholarship. The College will expand its support for interdisciplinary and applied research by building on its established faculty development framework—which currently includes research-based teaching releases, faculty-dedicated graduate assistantships, conference travel support, and startup research projects—by strengthening early career faculty mentoring, graduate student involvement in research and scholarship, cross-college interdisciplinary collaborations, research with postdoctoral and visiting scholars, and partnerships with industry and other academic institutions.

Educational Pathways and Support for Students from Under-Resourced Populations

Working Group Co-Chairs: Director of Arts Administration Douglas DeNatale and Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Danielle Rousseau
With its affordability, breadth of program areas (from humanities to IT to business), modalities (evenings, online, hybrid), and delivery formats (degrees, certificates, single courses), Metropolitan College provides a unique environment for exploring and deciding on an educational journey. However, awareness of these academic opportunities and access to financial support is often not available to traditionally underserved populations. Starting in 2021, MET has been developing scholarship and fellowship programs to increase diversity in targeted areas of study. We will expand this work into a program for identifying specific study areas, recruiting prospective students through partnerships and outreach events, and providing scholarships and fellowships to facilitate pathways to education.

Academic Engagement, Outreach, and Knowledge Dissemination

Working Group Chair: Chair of Applied Social Sciences Shea Cronin
MET will expand and strengthen academic engagement and knowledge dissemination efforts in two major directions: (1) new initiatives for training, professional development, and personal enrichment for the larger community, such as the establishment of a Summer Arts Management Institute and short non-unit preparatory programs in emerging areas; and (2) colloquia, research seminars, in-depth presentations, and discussions of disciplinary research, along with developing annual student conferences to showcase and promote the results of student projects and research.

Our Progress

Through 2030 we will be tracking progress related to our strategic initiatives.
