Students may receive the Megan McClung scholarship only once.

In Honor of Major McClung

Major Megan M. McClung completed her online master’s degree program in Criminal Justice in September of 2006. Most of the work she did on her degree was done in a war zone.

Megan grew up in a Marine Corps family in Mission Viejo, California, and received her officer’s commission from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995. She left active duty in 2004 and went to Iraq as a private contractor for Kellogg Brown & Root, a Halliburton subsidiary. In 2006, Megan returned to Iraq as a Marine.

Major McClung died December 6, 2006, while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. McClung was assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, Camp Pendleton, California.

Megan’s private life included an ardent love of her country, her family, and athletics. By the age of 34, she’d already completed numerous marathons and six ironman competitions. Megan’s abundant spirit and competitive nature made her a sharp-witted risk-taker, and an excellent Marine. She is also remembered as a terrific daughter, sister, friend, and student.

In May of 2007, as Megan’s parents Re and Mike attended what would have been her graduation ceremony in Boston, Metropolitan College announced a scholarship fund in Megan’s name and memory. The scholarship supports students in the online Criminal Justice program and is awarded annually to students who exemplify Megan’s own academic excellence, strong citizenship and character, and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.

Eligibility Requirements

Current and prospective students applying for the Megan McClung Memorial Scholarship must:

Be United States citizens or permanent residents

Be accepted into or enrolled in good standing in Metropolitan College’s online Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree program

Apply Now

Priority Deadline: July 15

To apply, please complete the McClung Scholarship Application form.

Applications are reviewed by faculty and staff of the MS in Criminal Justice program, with decisions based on information provided in the application and supporting documentation from the applicant’s record at BU MET and application to the MSCJ program (e.g., prior transcripts, essays).

Leading applicants for the McClung Scholarship will demonstrate strong academic performance and commitment to service—qualities aligned with the values Major McClung embodied.

How to Contribute

If you are interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the Major Megan McClung Memorial Scholarship fund, please make checks payable to Trustees of Boston University and write McClung in the memo.
