Individual schools and colleges, however, may place restrictions on the use of certain grades, such as Pass\/Fail. Any student whose cumulative GPA drops below 3.0 is placed on probation. When the student\u2019s overall GPA returns to 3.0 or higher, probation is removed.<\/p>\n<p>Grades of C or lower for most programs, or C\u2013 or lower for a few programs, are not considered passing for master\u2019s degree programs.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students can only retake an individual course once. Both grades will count toward the cumulative GPA. Departments may limit the total number of courses in the degree program that can be retaken. Please check with your department for information about repeating courses.<\/p>\n<h3>Semester Grade Point Index (GPI)<\/h3>\n<p>The grade point index for a semester is computed by dividing the total semester honor points earned at Boston University by the total semester credits of those subjects completed, with the following exceptions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The grade P (pass with credit) is not computed in the grade point average.<\/li>\n<li>I (incomplete) grades are not computed in the grade point average until all additional required work is fulfilled and an appropriate letter grade is assigned.<\/li>\n<li>J (registration in same or continuing course necessary to complete requirements) grades are not computed in the grade point average until the required work in the same or continuing course is completed. At that time, the total credits for the course are computed in the grade point average on the basis of the last grading date.<\/li>\n<li>For \u201cD\u201d grades, refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/policies\/policy-on-d-grades-for-undergraduate-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University\u00a0Policy on \u201cD\u201d Grades for Undergraduate Students<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Although F (fail, no credit) grades are awarded zero honor points, the number of attempted credits (per failed course\/s) is computed into the cumulative grade point average.<\/li>\n<li>For a grade of \u201cMG,\u201d refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/policies\/policy-on-missing-grades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University Policy on Missing Grades<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>* Instructors file grade change forms with the MET Dean\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>** Auditing students are not expected to fulfill the course requirements for a letter grade. Review of the work by auditing students is at the discretion of the instructor. Auditing students receive the grade of AU on the final grade report.<\/p>\n<p>*** W grades automatically appear on the student\u2019s transcript if he\/she has withdrawn from the College or officially dropped the course after the fifth week of class. <strong>Faculty should not assign W grades<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Pass\/Fail Grades<\/h3>\n<p>Please Note: The Pass\/Fail option applies to Metropolitan College undergraduate courses only.<\/p>\n<p>Undergraduate students in good academic standing may elect to take up to two (2) non-major courses on a Pass\/Fail basis; however, students must obtain signed approval from their academic counselor. Pass\/Fail Approval Forms may be picked up at Metropolitan College Undergraduate Student Services.\u00a0 The deadline for a student to designate a course Pass\/Fail is the course\u2019s drop with \u201cW\u201d grade date.\u00a0 Designating a course Pass\/Fail is irrevocable as of 5:00 p.m. on the deadline to withdraw with a \u201cW\u201d date.<\/p>\n<p>At the graduate level, courses taken Pass\/Fail cannot be counted toward a graduate degree.
