The cost of attendance (COA) is the cornerstone of establishing your financial need, as it sets a limit on the total aid that you may receive. The COA is not the bill that you get; it represents the total cost of attending college each year, including direct and indirect expenses, based on the length of the period of enrollment (usually a two-semester academic year). During this period, you may not receive a total amount of student aid (including scholarships, grants, federal student loans, and private student loans) that exceeds your COA.

If you’re attending at least half-time, your COA is the estimated cost of:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and board (housing and food allowance for off-campus students)
  • Books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, and miscellaneous expenses

For students attending less than half-time, the COA includes tuition and fees and an allowance for books.

While we strongly urge you to limit your borrowing to the amount of the standard Cost of Attendance (or ideally less), these figures represent the maximum combined financial aid a student may receive.

Note: summer financial aid COA allowances vary. For more information on summer maximum borrowing limits, contact our office.

*Massachusetts law requires all students carrying at least 75 percent of the full-time curriculum to be covered under a qualifying medical insurance plan. Financial aid can be used to cover this expense. If you do not wish to participate in the Boston University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you may waive SHIP coverage—provided you have other coverage that meets the comparable coverage requirements.
