Here, I expanded my knowledge of anatomy and physiology, but also received exposure to biomechanics and physics, which largely influenced my future endeavors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate\/master\u2019s\/postdoc?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many of my peers across the country\/globe, graduating in the spring of 2020 presented new challenges and opportunities. Though my original post-graduate plan was a career in physical therapy, after graduation I felt as though I was not 100% invested in or passionate about pursuing that path. With my background in physiology and interest in expanding my knowledge in the sciences\u2013particularly in biomechanics\u2013when I stumbled upon BU\u2019s LEAP program, I was immediately interested. I ultimately decided that my pursuit of a master\u2019s degree in biomedical engineering would be in BU\u2019s LEAP program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research investigates the behaviors of the extracellular matrix in tendon explants following an acute tensile strain. Literature has revealed that at higher strain levels on the stress-strain curve, collagen denaturation is present and increasing. However, at lower strain levels below a defined threshold, we want to clarify if microdamage occurs\u2013and to what degree. This work will hopefully provide insight for current and future work in our lab as it pertains to the matrix behaviors of tendons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most valuable advice I could give is to trust your intuition when starting out in the lab\u2013even though that can be easier said than done. I\u2019ve personally struggled with imposter syndrome throughout my time in academia, but I\u2019ve learned that leaning on your background and seeking support from your peers can help you realize that you\u2019re right where you belong.<\/p>\n<p>You have the potential to contribute meaningfully to scientific breakthroughs, so trust in your education and your work ethic, and keep an open mind as you continue building your skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you more of a \u201cdog person\u201d or a \u201ccat person\u201d?\u00a0 (Or both, or neither!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only am I more of a \u201cdog person\u201d, but I\u2019m a proud dog dad to a very handsome 5-year-old dog named Chandler. My girlfriend and I rescued Chandler in May 2020 at 4 months old, and we\u2019ve been incredibly lucky to watch him grow from this tiny, goofy, and timid puppy. Outside of all the benefits that comes with having a pet so pivotal to your family, Chandler has inspired our family enormously. In Spring of 2024, we got the gut-wrenching news that Chandler had thyroid cancer that wasn\u2019t feasible to treat. In the past year, not only have we given him endless number of treats, snuggles, walks, and love, we are so proud to say that despite his diagnosis, he is still thriving! Now, we navigate the unknown path ahead with so much gratitude for his lust for life and capacity for love from our family. So not only am I more of a \u201cdog person\u201d, I am so lucky to have my sweet boy, Chandler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you deal with the cold Boston winters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a native New Englander, you learn to bundle up and power through the long, bitter months. That said, I\u2019ve definitely started to consider trading out the winters and relocating somewhere with a warmer climate following graduation!<\/p>\n<p>________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/mechanobiology\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0649-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4219 size-thumbnail\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0649-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0649-189x189.jpg 189w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0649-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0649.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Last, but certainly not least, is our Trainee Spotlight on Ph.D. student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/profile\/jeremy-tran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Tran<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Jeremy is a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thengolab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ngo Lab<\/a>, working with PI John Ngo and his fellow trainees in the field of mammalian Synthetic Biology, specifically developing molecular tools to probe and re-program mammalian cell communication for potential cell-based medicine or tissue engineering applications.\u00a0 Learn more about Jeremy and his research in the following Q&amp;A!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I attended UC San Diego and majored in \u201cBioengineering: Biotechnology.\u201d I also minored in Chemistry and General Biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first research experience was at an internship at a small biotech company I began after my first year of undergrad. I ended up working at the company for 4 years, and the scientists I worked most closely with &#8211; Charlie Goodman and Michael Pauly, were great mentors and inspired me to pursue a career in biotechnology research. At UCSD, Professor Nathan E. Lewis and Hooman Hefzi gave me my first academic research experience which solidified my desire to pursue a PhD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate\/master\u2019s\/postdoc?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was attracted to BU because of Boston\u2019s fantastic biotech and scientific ecosystem, the strength of the BME program, and the many labs in the areas of research I was interested in pursuing in grad school \u2013 namely Systems and Synthetic Biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Broadly, my work is in the field of mammalian Synthetic Biology. I contributed to our Lab\u2019s effects developing molecular tools to probe and re-program mammalian cell communication for potential cell-based medicine or tissue engineering applications. In this work, we apply structure-guided protein engineering approaches to design new proteins and develop complementing cell-based assays to evaluate their function. Specifically, I contributed to the development of drug, light, protease, and force-sensing synthetic cell signaling systems using engineered Synthetic Notch receptors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in mammalian Synthetic Biology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before starting grad school, I was a Research Associate for a year in the field of Systems Biology in Prof. Nathan E. Lewis\u2019 Lab at UCSD. In this role, I was exposed to bioinformatics and contributed to analyzing transcriptomics data with the goal to improve cell line development for biologics manufacturing through targeted genome engineering (namely CRISPR-Cas9). The idea of being able to modify a cell to change its function fascinated me.<\/p>\n<p>This got me excited about the bottom-up perspective of Synthetic Biology to \u2018re-wire\u2019 cells for therapeutic application. This led me to join Prof. John Ngo\u2019s lab which uses a structure-guided approach to develop new proteins to control cell function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of my graduate work has been focused on studying the Notch protein- a mechanosensitive receptor. We are interested in how cells exert the tensile forces required to activate this receptor. This aligns with the CMTM\u2019s goal to study mechanical forces down to the molecular level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My goal is to become a Professor at a University in the related fields of protein engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My advice would first to be open on the research field and topic. Your working relationship with your advisor and lab mates is the most important thing in your time in grad school, so I would advise to prioritize this match. Don\u2019t be afraid to pursue a new research field that is distinct from your previous research experiences.\u00a0 You will pick up the skills and become an expert in your topic in no time!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I enjoy being out in nature. So while in Boston I enjoy going on bike rides outside of the city. On weekend trips I enjoy skiing and hiking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favorite comfort food?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would have to say ratatouille. It was a staple in my household, as my parents are from France.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you more of a \u201cdog person\u201d or a \u201ccat person\u201d?\u00a0 (Or both, or neither!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew up with a family dog, so I am more of a dog person!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you do to relax after a long day of studying and working in the lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like to exercise to wind down after work. Whether that is a bike ride, run, or walk around the block. When the weather is poor, I have found stationary bike to be the next best thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you had to have a career outside of science, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before pursuing biomedical research as a career, I wanted to go to medical school and become a doctor with the motivation to help patients. Once I discovered research, I realized that I could make an impact in peoples live by contributing to our understanding of disease and potentially develop new treatments. Although it is further away from the bedside, reminding myself of the goal to improve patient care has kept me motivated me throughout my time in grad school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you could have a postdoc position with any PI in any lab in the world after this, what scientific area would it be in and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would like to do a postdoc in protein engineering and maybe learn and contribute to the development of new screening technologies to isolate proteins for a desired function. My graduate work was focused on using a structure-guided mutagenesis approach to develop new proteins, so learning pooled screening techniques would be valuable to round out my expertise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you prefer \u201cpure science,\u201d or are you more interested translational research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have developed an appreciation for both \u201cpure\u201d and \u201capplied\u201d research and have enjoyed working on both during my time in graduate school. What excites me the most is to learn something fundamental in biology to then apply it in some way for translational research. In my career I hope to continue working in both realms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the biggest accomplishments that you and your lab have recently had?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seeing our research published and accessible to others in field is very gratifying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you most proud of achieving throughout your academic journey thus far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My most proud achievement thus far was defending my PhD Defense. It was a special moment to present what I have worked on for the past 6 years to my family and friends and command my research subject.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the most exciting thing about joining John Ngo\u2019s lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was interested in many of the research projects going on in the lab at the time, so was excited to contribute to any of them when I first joined. I was particularly drawn to Chris Sloas\u2019s synthetic mechanobiology project involving the Notch receptor. I ended up working on that project once he graduated in 2020, and the work was published in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you from originally?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew up and went to undergrad in San Diego, California. Moving to Boston for graduate school was a big change!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are you enjoying the urban campus of BU, as opposed to a more traditional isolated college campus setting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I enjoy how close and accessible BU is to downtown Boston. I grew up and went to undergrad in a suburban environment, so I have enjoyed the change of pace here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you deal with the cold Boston winters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found that a warm coat is essential to be able to still enjoy the outdoors in the wintertime. I commute by bike year-round and found that bar mitts are a bit plus for making the cold and windy commutes more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you could go on vacation anywhere in the world, money no object, where would you go and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would like to go to South America and backpack in the National Parks there, like Patagonia. Visiting and scuba diving in the Galapagos would also be amazing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I knew I wanted to be a scientist after a few years working at that small biotech. There wasn\u2019t a specific \u2018aha\u2019 moment, but it must have been around junior year of undergrad when I realized I would rather do an experiment in lab than be in class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of books do you read for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have always enjoyed nonfiction. Growing up I primarily read history. Since grad school, I like to read popular science books written by or about scientists to learn about their backstory and experiences in research. He was the professor who first introduced me to biomechanics research and working with him set me on the path to pursuing a PhD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research focuses on uncovering sex and hormonal differences in tendon mechanobiology by studying hormone incorporation and metabolism, strain dependent impacts of hormones on ECM remodeling, and variable timing and concentrations of hormone delivery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am planning to pursue a career in industry after graduating, but I&#8217;m still figuring out whether I want to continue as a research scientist or switch into a more managerial role.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you had to have a career outside of science, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I had to have a career outside of science, I think I would choose to be a policy advisor. I really enjoyed the American public policy and ethics in policy classes I took during my undergrad and had considered looking into job opportunities in health policy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What have you discovered as part of your research that has surprised you or your team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Something in my research that surprised me is how much we still have to learn about women\u2019s health. There are so many unknowns when it comes to sex and hormonal differences, but luckily there are a lot of great researchers committed to filling in those knowledge gaps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of books do you read for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I really enjoy reading in my free time and like books across a wide range of genres. I recently defended my dissertation on how we can use these to predict disease progression in personalized human CT scans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in this topic?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At WSU, I worked in a biomechanics lab that specifically looked at gait in kangaroo rats. During that time, I found a love for coding and biomechanics. When I came to BU and joined Dr. Suki\u2019s lab, I was thrilled to find an opportunity that allowed me to continue to pursue these passions while having an impact on lung diseases, which have had a large impact on my family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research combines spring network models which represent structure and mechanical behaviors with agent-based models which represent the biological mechanisms that act upon the structure. The interaction between these two models shows how essential it is to study biological processes in an accurate mechanical environment, and this aligns with CMTM\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love to paint! I started painting when I started grad school and it\u2019s helped me stay balanced with research and art. They both helped me greatly at UF and I owe them a lot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our continuing efforts to understand tendon mechanobiology, we put mouse tendons under healthy strain under a cyclic hormone regiment, mimicking that of their reproductive cycle, to determine whether peaks and falls of female sex hormones will cause obvious differences in the viscoelastic properties of the tendon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After she gave a talk, I asked Dr. Connizzo if her work on sex hormone impact on tendon health implicated health concerns for transgender athletes and other individuals and I sort of went down a bit of a rabbit hole into my current project on cyclic hormone cycles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our research could reveal some of the underlying trends of tendon mechanobiology as a result of biological factors for future applications in medicine within women\u2019s health!<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I want to enter the biotech industry and ideally work in cancer therapy or immunology, but above all else, I just want to try and make the world a better place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has our Center supported you over the past year?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The symposium last semester was a great way to learn about each other\u2019s research and I really enjoyed hearing from so many different yet connected researchers!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you prefer \u201cpure science,\u201d or are you more interested translational research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I prefer translational research. Additionally, the center also hosted the CMTM Symposium which allowed me to present my research and receive insightful feedback. Lastly, the weekly updates are a lifesaver when it comes to being up to date with deadlines and grant applications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you prefer \u201cpure science,\u201d or are you more interested translational research?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nPart of me loves the art of discovering and part of me wants to see these discoveries help patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favorite band or genre of music?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My favorite composer while writing is Hans Zimmer, whom I got to see live at the Garden in 2024, however, my favorite band for wet lab activities are the Black Keys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you could go on vacation anywhere in the world, money no object, where would you go and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anywhere they have filmed\/or are planning to film a White Lotus season. Celeste has been a very active member of the CMTM community, including presenting at our annual Trainees on Tap event!<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I attended Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in China where I majored in Biomedical Engineering and focus on biomaterial for bone regeneration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prof. Bin Tang is my scientific mentor (PI) at SUSTech. He is also the guide of my academic path. Prof. Jixian Zhai is my advisor that leads me to the field of Biomedical Engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate\/master\u2019s\/postdoc?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I got a chance to study as an exchange student at MIT at my senior year. During the time I had a nice experience of living in Boston. And I found the engineering college at BU provides a good environment for interdisciplinary research. Collaborations within BU makes it easier to have resources from different fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m doing the mechanics and mechanobiology within lung tissue, with a focus on collagen fibers. In my research, I study the mechanics in individual collagen fibers from lung tissue and how immune cells respond to those changes of mechanics. I found that the increase of mechanical loads in collagen fibers would accelerate its degradation during disease progression. I\u2019m also looking at the collagen fiber remodeling in human tissue based on images.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in this research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I got wet lab experience from my undergrad and started getting interested in mechanics at my senior year at MIT. So I wanted to work on biomechanics when I enter BU. Prof. Bela Suki\u2019s lab is doing the mechanics in lung tissue. He has the idea of getting mechanical measurements at fiber-level in lung tissue. And he has a postdoc that worked on the device and experiment protocol in the lab when I joined his lab. I\u2019m so happy to continue the work and start my PhD with this focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m doing mechanical studies at multiscale of the lung tissue, with both fiber and tissue level. And I studied how cells response to mechanics in collagen fibers which relate to the mechanobiology in lung tissue. My translational research is based on my finds in collagen fibers digestion under mechanical loads that would have implications in mechanical redistribution in the damage of lung tissue during disease progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do something that can help some people. Contribute something to make the world a tiny bit better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enjoy your research and PhD journey. My extracellular work involves engineering Synthetic Notch (SynNotch) receptors to sense attributes of the extracellular matrix around a cell and trigger programmed cellular responses. For my intracellular work, I analyze single RNA molecules, measuring shifts in Brownian motion that occur due to changes in molecular mass when proteins bind to RNA, as well as processes that actively transport RNA to specific subcellular compartments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favorite comfort food?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Star Market frozen pizza, but only when it&#8217;s on sale for three bucks a pie. Eaten entirely in one sitting, naturally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you had to have a career outside of science, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think I would have made a great motorcycle racer, but people keep telling me it&#8217;s too dangerous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you prefer \u201cpure science,\u201d or are you more interested in translational research (using the research you do in your lab to develop new ways to diagnose and treat disease)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lab I work in develops tools that can be used both to answer new scientific questions and to solve new translational problems. One of the newer tools I&#8217;ve developed should solve a specific translational problem that doesn&#8217;t yet have a straightforward solution, so I am very interested in translation right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are you enjoying the urban campus of BU, as opposed to a more traditional isolated college campus setting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether my campus is urban or secluded, I know that I&#8217;ll spend most of my time in the lab. The Kilachand Center that I work in is a fantastic building- well-lit and spacious, so I&#8217;m very pleased with BU&#8217;s campus. I will never stop complaining aboutthe rent here in Boston though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you deal with the cold Boston winters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I installed full-spectrum LED lights and have many plants at my desk to trick myself into thinking it&#8217;s not winter. It works well! We interviewed Matt for our first trainee spotlight of 2025; see Q&amp;A below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am a proud graduate of the University of Virginia, and I majored in biomedical engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research mentors were Dr. Jeff Holmes, Dr. Kyoko Yoshida, and Dr. Pim Oomen. However, I frequently relied on others for general scientific mentoring such as Dr. Shannon Barker, Dr. Silvia Blemker, and Dr. Brian Helmke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research focuses on uncovering how mechanical and biological factors impact the tendon microdamage repair process, with the goal of promoting complete tendon regeneration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in biomedical engineering?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going into undergrad, I was set on becoming a cardiac surgeon after graduation, but I decided to major in biomedical engineering instead of biology because I considered myself to be decent at math (and I was told it is easier to switch out of engineering than switch into it). I quickly fell in love with the design process and collaborative nature of engineering field during my first semester, which led me to join a lab researching cardiac biomechanics and drop the goals of medical school. My positive experience in this biomechanics lab during COVID prompted me to pursue research opportunities in musculoskeletal biomechanics and mechanobiology, as I thought it would be a perfect way to combine my passions of biomedical engineering and sports science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I enjoy participating in a variety of sports: I rock climb indoors for my regularly scheduled workouts, but I also snowboard during the winter, play tennis during the summer, and play on a BU BME IM soccer team during the spring and fall. I mechanically characterize the vessels to compare how they respond to deformations like pressurization and stretching. I also get images of the fibrous artery wall structure to better understand why the mechanical responses might be changing. Finally, I relate these mechanical and structural changes to aging and disease progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our work tries to synthesize many scales of biology, from tissue level mechanics to microstructural protein changes, which fits in well with the \u2018multiscale\u2019 aspect of CMTM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since I recently turned 30, my brain told me I should get interested in birds and photography. So now I really enjoy going to local nature reserves to find new birds (and other wildlife) and photograph them if possible. A favorite spot is Hall\u2019s Pond Sanctuary just near the CRC in Brookline, with its resident great blue heron.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you more of a \u201cdog person\u201d or a \u201ccat person\u201d? (Or both, or neither!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have always been a cat person \u2013 I grew up with 2 cats, one of whom is still alive, almost 20 years old. I appreciate how low maintenance they tend to be, though I like when my friends have dogs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you prefer \u201cpure science,\u201d or are you more interested translational research (using the research you do in your lab to develop new ways to diagnose and treat disease)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think I generally prefer the pure science perspective because I care more about how (biological) things work and figuring out how to characterize them, more so than the translational research that comes after.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you from originally?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am from the Silicon Valley\/Bay Area in California. It\u2019s a miracle I made it out of there without the desire to become a software engineer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew up surrounded by (civil) engineers and so I was always STEM-inclined and enjoyed math. But the distinct moment was when I was cooped up in the cabin of an Alaskan cruise when I was 15. We were watching some science program on TV about nanobots that could be sent into the bloodstream to help treat some condition. The Movement &amp; Applied Imaging Lab <span size=\"3\">is a trans<\/span><span size=\"3\">-disciplinary collaboration<\/span><span size=\"3\"> with the objective of preventing and managing musculoskeletal disorders, primarily osteoarthritis.<\/span>  Soyoung has attended many CMTM events, and took some time to answer our Q&amp;A.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated from Yonsei University, located in Seoul, South Korea. I pursued my undergraduate degree in Physical Education and master\u2019s degree in Sports Rehabilitation at Yonsei Univ. While taking a Biomechanics class in the US as an exchange student, I got interested in studying human movement. Later, Dr. Lee, my former advisor, inspired me to develop my interest in the scientific way to explore the mechanism of sports injuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My previous mentor was Dr. Sae Yong Lee at Yonsei Univ. His research focused on examining the mechanism of lower-limb musculoskeletal injuries, such as chronic ankle instability and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, preventing those injuries, and developing interventions. Dr. Lee and I mainly worked on estimating the risk of post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) after ACL injuries and long-term biomechanical changes after ACL surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate\/master\u2019s\/postdoc?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found Movement &amp; Applied Imaging Lab while searching schools and reached out to Dr. Deepak Kumar, my current PI. I thought my research goal, which was to study the biomechanics of people with chronic musculoskeletal disease and prevent further disease progression, matched very well with the lab\u2019s vision and ongoing works. Also, having members from diverse backgrounds and opportunities to collaborate with them made me excited to join the lab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although It is common to observe abnormal walking patterns in people with knee osteoarthritis, whether the maladaptive function of the brain guides these movement patterns is unknown. Hence, my research focuses on understanding cortical function associated with abnormal walking patterns in people with knee OA using an optical neuroimaging technique. Also, we study how pathological conditions related to chronic pain (i.e., heightened state of nociceptive neurons) affect their cortical function and abnormal movement patterns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I usually play tennis during my non-working hours (play double, happy to play with if anyone is interested). Tim has not only taken the time to answer a few of our questions, but he also volunteered to present at our next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mechanobiology\/events\/trainee-journal-club\/\">Journal Club<\/a> meeting on April 28th!<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I attended Drexel University and got my bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in mechanical engineering. I switched to biomedical engineering for my Ph.D. to gain a deeper knowledge of the biology side of mechanobiology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research advisor at Drexel, Dr. Najafi, played a big role in teaching me the fundamentals of computational mechanics, how to approach research questions, and what it means to be an engineer. Through Drexel\u2019s co-op program, I was fortunate enough to meet and work with many great scientists and engineers. Alex Iwaskiw at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Drs. Vadigepalli and Freeman at Thomas Jefferson University, and Jason Long at J&amp;J-DePuy Synthes were all particularly influential in guiding me on my path in biomechanics\/mechanobiology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate\/master\u2019s\/postdoc?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The city of Boston and BU\u2019s great reputation were both big factors, but the deciding factor for me was Dr. Morgan\u2019s lab. I was really excited by the work being done in her lab and wanted to be a part of it, and I feel very fortunate to now be one of her students!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research deals with 3D printed scaffolds for bone growth. Carina has been an active member of the CMTM community, so we were excited to get to know more about her!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI went to Hong Kong Baptist University and received my undergraduate degree in Applied Biology. I also have a minor in Business. During my undergraduate study, I joined Dr. Chris Wong\u2019s lab and worked on nasopharyngeal carcinoma and hypoxia response.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a graduate student in the Varelas Lab, my primary research focuses on the Hippo signaling pathway in T cells, investigating the role of several major Hippo pathway components on T cell behavior and development. Immunotherapies have emerged as a promising treatment option for various diseases, particularly cancer. One of the major challenges facing current immunotherapies is sustaining T cell activation and recruitment in immunosuppressive tumors. I use both in vitro and in vivo mouse models to study the effect of the Hippo pathway on T cell behavior, with the ultimate goal of developing immunotherapies that have a better T cell response, specifically in immunosuppressive cancers such as melanoma. In addition, I am investigating the effect of the Hippo pathway in T cell responses to viral\/bacterial infections. I hope that a better understanding of this mechanism will help to improve immunotherapies for various diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you more of a \u201cdog person\u201d or a \u201ccat person\u201d? (Or both, or neither!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love all kinds of fluffy pets. And I am a dog person now! I have a 4-year-old Pomeranian. I feel very lucky to have her in my life and especially during graduate school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the most exciting thing about joining the Varelas lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our lab has a focus on understanding the Hippo signaling pathway, but each graduate students carry a very independent project which includes lung biology, immunology, breast cancer, and oral cancer research. It is a great environment to learn from various fields and apply them to my research. We also have active collaborations for every project, and we are very excited to be part of CMTM and keep exploring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Critical thinking, attention to detail, and being independent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you from originally?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was born and raised in China, and I lived in Hong Kong for 4 years during college. I also took a marine biology class in Vancouver, Canada. I also volunteered as an English teacher in Thailand one summer during college. His lab investigates the effects of hormones, intracellular signaling and mechanical forces on osteocytes both \u201cin vivo\u201d, using genetically modified animal models, and \u201cin vitro\u201d using novel osteocytic cell line.  Yuhei is our other Trainee Leader for 2022, and he took some time out between helping us organize events to answer our questions; see below.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I went to Tohoku University (Sendai, Japan) and majored in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I always wanted to get involved in space research and found that Dr. Paola Divieti Pajevic\u2019s group was going to send a type of bone cells (osteocytes) to the international space station to study on bone loss in space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am interested in disuse\/unloading- and age-induced bone loss\/osteoporosis with a focus on the role of osteocytes in those skeletal disorders. Studying the parathyroid hormone (PTH) signaling in osteocytes to develop a therapeutic approach for osteoporosis with extensive use of a transgenic mouse and an <em>in vitro<\/em> cell model.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in skeletal biology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since I wanted to get involved in space research, I was looking for a lab I could join as a PhD student. Luckily, I found Dr. Paola Divieti Pajevic and her research focus is bone loss in space, which is related to cell\/tissue biomechanics, which is also similar to what I had been studying about in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Understanding the detailed cellular and molecular mechanicsms by which osteocytes can sense and respond to unloading is perfectly matched with CMTM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am looking into changing my career from academa to industry and am hoping to be a lead or chief scientist in a biotech or pharmaceutical company. Also, since the usage of space environment to synthesize new drugs is emerging in pharmaceutical companies, I hope to get involved in those projects in future to contribute to developing new drugs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have detailed and well-organized records of your experiments<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like to do for fun?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like riding my bike and I do it almost every day even during winter. We interviewed Emma for our first trainee spotlight of 2022; see Q&amp;A below.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Where did you attend college, and in what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>I graduated from Cornell University in 2020 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and concentration in Biomechanics\/Mechanobiology! I also have a minor in Global Health. My undergraduate research was pretty different than what I am doing now. At Cornell, I worked with Dr. Jonathan Butcher\u2019s group on biofabrication of thick pre-vascularized tissues to reconstruct chronic deep tissue wounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you from originally?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Blacksburg, VA. I\u2019ve actually been doing biomedical engineering research since I was a junior in high school. Through a program at my high school, I was able to receive course credit for working in a lab at Virginia Tech two afternoons a week.  I also did a summer of research at Virginia Tech during college. Working on tendon fatigue loading with Dr. Vincent Wang\u2019s Lab at VT was what originally sparked my interest in biomechanics\/tendon research and inspired my graduate research track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My research examines biological drivers of the structural and functional degeneration of soft tissues with aging that give rise to musculoskeletal injuries in elderly populations. Musculoskeletal injuries disproportionally effect aging and elderly populations, yet the degeneration of tendon with aging is not well understood. Specifically, I study senescent cell populations that accumulate in tissues with age and secrete a highly pro-inflammatory secretory profile that can lead to ECM breakdown.  My research aims to investigate the effect of senescent cell populations on tendon ECM homeostasis and mechanical function in response to normal and injurious stimuli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brought you to BU to pursue your doctorate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Growing up and attending college in small college towns, I knew I wanted to attend graduate school in a city. Boston appealed to me because it was on the East Coast near my family and also has great access to the outdoors! When applying to graduate school, I met my PI, Brianne Connizzo, through a mutual connection and were able to meet during my visit weekend. I ultimately chose BU because I was super excited by Brianne\u2019s work and mentorship style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the biggest accomplishments that you and your lab have recently had?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since my lab is a new lab that opened in January, 2021, it was a really great accomplishment for us to attend the 2022 Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) Conference in Tampa this February. My lab-mate and I both presented posters on projects that we had essentially designed and conducted fully over the last 9-months. Read more about Rohin and his time here at BU thus far below!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: In what field is your undergraduate degree?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I started off as pre-med BME for my undergraduate work but after a whimsical decision to study introductory material science during my sophomore year I graduated with a major in Biomedical Engineering and minor in Material Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Can you give us a brief overview of your research?  How did you get involved in it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My research work presently deals with analysing the mechanics and biology of cancer in mouse lungs in a novel and physiologically-relevant ex vivo environment. I was attending a seminar in the Mechanical Engineering department during my first year and heard my current PI (Dr. Hadi Nia) talk about his upcoming work \u2014 sent him an email, rotated with him, about 6 months after that first presentation joined the lab. I was looking for a project with a good balance of experimental and computational work and this fit the bill just right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How<span> <\/span>have your lab\u2019s operations changed since the start of the pandemic one year ago?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I joined my lab for my rotation two days before BU went into lockdown mode \u2014 so I have known nothing but the pandemic operation of the lab. I\u2019m excited to see where it goes from here!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I don\u2019t know exactly when I wanted to be a scientist, but I can remember when I wanted to be an engineer \u2014 the first time the LEGO manual was not enough for me and I broke everything apart to build with intuition and creativity, haha. Somewhere along the line I started asking myself about the \u2018how\u2019 to look at something differently rather than following the \u2018manual\u2019 and perhaps therein started the journey to be a scientist. Learn more about her interests in the following Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: The first mentors I had were my two favorite science teachers in high school, Mrs. Neri and Ms. Dawson. In my senior year I would spend many of my lunch periods with them talking not just about classwork, but also about our broader interests in science. They both had so much more knowledge to share than just what their course syllabi included, and their advice was so helpful for me when transitioning from high school to college. During my undergraduate research career, I learned a lot not just from my PI Dr. Steven Nicoll, but also from his two graduate students at the time, Nada Haq-Siddiqi and Jesse Martin. Beyond just teaching me new techniques around the lab, they were also very happy to discuss their work in detail and to find ways for me to get involved in as much research as possible. They also had some invaluable insight about graduate school that played a big part in my decision to pursue a PhD of my own!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Currently, my research is focused on measuring and attempting to understand the ability of different cell types to maintain their endogenous mechanical stress, a concept known as tensional homeostasis. We do this through the use of fluorescent extracellular matrix protein micropatterns, which we can stamp onto soft polyacrylamide substrates of varying stiffnesses. The pattern is an array of 2-um dots spaced 6 um center-to-center on a grid, and these dots are loci where cells can form focal adhesions. By imaging the adhered cells over time, observing the motion of the dots in response to cell contraction, and knowing the mechanical properties of our gel, we can compute the traction forces of each individual focal adhesion. By measuring the traction forces of a cell as it recovers from applied stress, we gain insight into the cell\u2019s ability to maintain tensional homeostasis. We can also measure the traction forces of groups of cells in a similar manner, which is done just by creating small patches or \u201cislands\u201d of our micropattern rather than a single large grid. This all relates to CMTM in that we\u2019re very interested in discovering how a cell\u2019s ability to maintain tensional homeostasis (or not) affects its viability and functionality, as loss of this homeostasis has been connected to the progression of different diseases, including cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Right now I\u2019m a bit divided on whether I want to pursue a career in academia or industry after I graduate, but if I had to choose one I would say that I lean more towards academia. I\u2019ve always enjoyed the environment that performing research in academia provides, particularly the way that at most universities there is a lot of scientific collaboration between members of not just one department, but several. My own project, for instance, has connections to both BU\u2019s BE and ME departments, and I\u2019ve had the opportunity to work with faculty and students from both sides. I still have quite a bit of time before graduation, though, so we\u2019ll see if my goals are the same a few years down the line!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What do you do to relax after a long day of studying and working in the lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Depending on the time of year\/weather, sometimes I\u2019ll choose to walk home from campus instead of taking the train, just to enjoy some fresh air. Once I\u2019m home, I enjoy winding down with a book (usually a fantasy novel, with some science fiction thrown in the mix as well), a warm cup of tea, and my cat Alfie sitting in my lap. Right now I\u2019m reading The Hobbit, and have really been enjoying it so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How has our Center supported you over the past year?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: One of the best perks of being a part of CMTM is the monthly journal clubs that started up just this past semester. These meetings have been great not just for introducing me to new and exciting ideas in mechanical research, but it also gives me the opportunity to socialize with my peers in the CMTM community. I\u2019ve really enjoyed attending these meetings and being able to talk science with members of different labs, as everyone has their own background knowledge and brings something different to the conversation. Also, beyond just our discussion about the paper, we do also spend some time at these meetings just chatting about other things and having fun, which is always a nice change of pace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Science and math were always my best subjects in school, but I didn\u2019t know for certain that I wanted to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering until just before I began sending out applications for college. In the fall of my senior year in high school, I attended a symposium at another local school where the keynote speaker discussed cancer genetics in more detail than I\u2019d ever heard before. He also spent a small portion of his presentation talking about some of the newest breakthroughs in tissue engineering and biomaterials, which was what really drew me in and ultimately led to my decision to apply to biomedical engineering programs. His research in biomechanics have made him a valuable asset to our CMTM community, and we were excited that he agreed to sit down with us to further discuss his interests with us!<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. Dr. Conrad Zapanta (who reluctantly went by Dr. Z) was my faculty advisor in the BME department at CMU and helped me chart out my undergraduate career and demystify the intimidating world of academia which eventually led to my applying for PhD programs. I discovered my passion for research when I joined Dr. Keith Cook&#8217;s cardiovascular and pulmonary mechanics lab at CMU my freshman year; Dr. Cook has been an incredible mentor in my scientific career from the moment I first worked on projects related to reducing coagulation in implantable artificial lung devices. Finally, my research mentor during my summer engineering fellowship at WashU in STL, Dr. Jessica Wagenseil, helped me understand the breadth of opportunities in Dr. Jessica Wagenseil&#8217;s lab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. I hope to be working on research and development of medical devices either within academia or industry and am looking forward to exploring these career options as I progress in my program. Furthermore, I will work to increase representation of URM students at all levels of academia through mentorship and initiatives that will reduce or eliminate the barriers URM may be facing at various stages of their scientific careers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. My advice to an incoming graduate student in my life is to make sure that they do not neglect work-life balance by intentionally separating moments of their day \/ week to restorative activities that aren&#8217;t academically motivated. Hobbies that involve the outdoors are my personal favorite to help my brain reset for each day of thinking!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What is your favorite comfort food?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. Lech\u00f3n asado (roasted pork) made fresh at lechoneras in the southeastern region of Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How has our Center supported you over the past year?  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. The monthly CMTM journal clubs have been a great way of connecting with fellow trainees while simultaneously giving me the opportunity to engage in discussions about exciting work outside of my immediate field. I have also appreciated the additional resources for seminars and funding opportunities that the Center has made available for us throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What else can the Center do to support you further?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. CMTM branded Patagonia jackets would be amazing&#8230; but on a more realistic note, the CMTM trainee journal clubs and social events have been an amazing way to connect with the cohort community especially in the midst of the pandemic that has deterred organic conversations from occurring on campus, which are a meaningful part of the PhD program that is easy to overlook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: If you could have a postdoc position with any PI in any lab in the world after this, what scientific area would it be in and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. Assuming Elise (Morgan) is not accepting any postdocs for our lab at the time, I would love to enter an interdisciplinary biomechanics lab where I can continue to expand my research skills portfolio such as the Bouxsein Lab at MIT which studies the causes, detection, and treatment of skeletal fragility. Their study regarding the changes in vertebral loading in astronauts after long duration spaceflight is especially fascinating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What is one of your favorite lab meeting memories from your time at BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. The first time I was able to contribute meaningful feedback to a fellow lab member who was presenting their research updates was a special moment for me since it signaled a milestone that symbolized my growth from the rotation student who was getting to grips with batching MATLAB and Python scripts onto the SCC (and constantly calling ENG IT for help) to a member of the lab who could engage in meaningful discussion with the adequate language (of the orthopaedics schema).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What have you discovered as part of your research that has surprised you or your team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. I have spent most of my time (outside of GST duties and coursework) this year on studying phenomenological models that describe inelastic behavior of materials. While it is interesting to explore the mechanisms that govern this inelastic behavior, one very surprising quality of these models is that those details of these mechanisms are not as important as how the model is actually representing (phenomenologically) the overall mechanical behavior of some arbitrary material. Then we can fiddle around with the various dials and switches (parameters) of the model to represent the material. This is fascinating because it allows you to study very complicated structures at various scales and under non-trivial loading situations, without getting bogged down by the specifics of the material at the atomic level. Neat!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What are you most proud of achieving throughout your academic journey thus far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. I am most proud of establishing my candidacy in the PhD program by having passed my qualifying exam last semester. Preparing for the exam gave me the opportunity to connect the fundamental concepts I had learned in my classes to my research project, with great feedback on what to focus on as I continue to define the scope of my project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I realized how thoroughly I enjoyed research partway through undergrad at CMU when working on my capstone projects. While building and optimizing prototypes was undeniably fun, it was really the backend part of the process that fascinated me the most: carrying out the research to understand the need that my team and I could innovate on given the gaps in the market. We appreciate her taking the time to talk with us for this spotlight!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Who were your scientific mentors before coming to BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My undergrad PI, Dr. Catherine Kuo, who I worked with at the University of Rochester, was a really important mentor to me. She taught me a lot about being meticulous in the lab, dealing with experimental failures, and communicating science. Her belief in me as a young scientist definitely led me to pursue the PhD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Can you give us a brief overview of your research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My research focuses on understanding how cells use intracellular signaling to sense their surroundings, make decisions, and coordinate complex multicellular behaviors. Specifically, I look at how a protein called ERK integrates both mechanical and biochemical cues to coordinate fibroblast migration after tissue injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: If you could have a postdoc position with any PI in any lab in the world after this, what scientific area would it be in and why? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Probably working on super-resolution microscopy. Being able to see new biology that is pretty much unimaginable without these new techniques seems fascinating to me. Every day you would discover something no one has ever seen before, that&#8217;s cool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What is your favorite band or genre of music?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I am a sucker for indie rock and rap. My favorite album right now is Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers but I have recently fallen into a Dua Lipa obsession and can&#8217;t stop listening to Future Nostalgia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What was the most exciting thing about joining Allyson Sgro\u2019s lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Getting to use our spinning disk confocal microscope!!!! Every single time that I get on the scope I am amazed that we are able to see such complex biology at work. There is nothing better than showing a student live cells under the scope for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How are you enjoying the urban campus of BU, as opposed to a more traditional isolated college campus setting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Living in Boston is a huge part of why I decided to come to BU. I grew up and went to college in Upstate New York and I really wanted to live in a city during grad school. Josh is a graduate student working in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/odbl\/\">Orthopaedic &amp; Developmental Biomechanics Lab<\/a> in the College of Engineering, and has been an active member of our CMTM community, including launching the Trainee Journal Club with fellow grad student Rohin Banerji.  We asked him some questions about his time here at BU, and he was kind enough to take the time to share his answers with us!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How do your current research interests align with our Center for Multiscale &amp; Translational Mechanobiology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My research focuses on Osteoarthritis-related changes in bone density and microstructure within the human proximal femur and their effect on the mechanical integrity of the hip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What are your career goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I hope to be a part of a research and development team for biomedical devices focused on fracture- and disease-prevention solutions. I also hope to one day become an astronaut and contribute to scientific research on the effects of long-term spaceflight on bone structure and function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>What advice would you give to incoming first-year graduate students in your lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Grad school is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Plan and take care of yourself accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>What do you do to relax after a long day of studying and working in the lab?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I fix and use old film cameras, build mechanical keyboards, tinker with mechanical watches, and have recently picked up my old love for drawing. After spending all day in front of a screen, it is relaxing to step away from the computer for a bit. During the before-times I did a lot of traveling and backpacking too \u2013 I hope to get back to that someday soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>If you had to have a career outside of science, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Astronaut and travel photographer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: How has our Center supported you over the past year? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I have had the opportunity to organize and lead the CMTM Journal Club meetings, which has given me a space to meet other CMTM Trainees and learn about other CMTM-related research fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What else can the Center do to support you further?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: It would be great to have CMTM-funded opportunities to gather in-person with the other trainees in the future. Also, having CMTM apparel would be really cool to see across so many research fields and help create a sense of unity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What is one of your favorite lab meeting memories from your time at BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Lab hot pot dinner. Well anything with food really.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What have you discovered as part of your research that has surprised you or your team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A. I was surprised to \u201cdiscover\u201d that no matter the scientific field, some sort of coding is always needed.
