Declercq PhD,\u00a0<\/span><span>Candice Belanoff ScD, MPH, and\u00a0<\/span><span>Carol Sakala PhD, MSPH publish &#8220;<\/span>Intrapartum Care and Experiences of Women with Midwives Versus Obstetricians in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><i>Listening to Mothers in California<\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span>Survey&#8221; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/15422011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Midwifery &amp; Women&#8217;s Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Following the initial reporting of the\u00a0<\/span><i>Listening to Mothers in California<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>survey in 2018, Drs. Declercq and Belanoff and I are involved in publishing several secondary analyses from this dataset.&#8221; &#8211; Carol Sakala<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Findings:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span class=\"current-selection\">Significant socioeconomic differences by type of intrapartum care provider, with women in California attended\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">by midwives more likely to be well educated and privately insured than women attended by obstetricians. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"current-selection\">Women with midwife birth attendants\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">were less likely to report experiencing various intrapartum medical interventions, less likely to experience pressure to have epidural analgesia,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">more likely to report that staff encouraged the woman\u2019s decision making. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"current-selection\">Adjusted odds ratios found that women with midwives were less likely to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">experience medical interventions, including attempted labor induction; labor augmentation; and use of pain medications, epidural analgesia, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">intravenous fluids; and less likely to report pressure to have labor induction or epidural analgesia. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"current-selection\">Women cared for by midwives were more likely\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">to experience any non pharmacologic pain relief measures and nitrous ox<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">ide and to agree that hospital staff encouraged their decision making.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/jmwh.13027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ: Intrapartum Care and Experiences of Women with Midwives Versus Obstetricians in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><i>Listening to Mothers in California<\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span>Survey<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MCH Faculty\u00a0Eugene R.
