Current research in the Hansen laboratory elucidates molecular pathways that regulate key mammalian cell cycle transitions, and the translation of this knowledge to treatment of cancer. Our studies focus on the oncogene LSF, a ubiquitously expressed transcription factor and cell cycle regulator. Molecular and cell biology techniques are used to uncover how LSF regulates multiple cell cycle events (DNA replication and mitosis) and how LSF promotes oncogenesis. Furthermore, through collaboration with the Schaus laboratory, we are characterizing novel LSF-specific small molecule inhibitors and probing their mode of action in combating tumor growth in mouse models, in the notable absence of observed toxicity. Our goal is developing chemotherapeutics for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and other LSF-mediated cancers.
