{"id":9435,"date":"2022-08-09T15:10:56","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T19:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/math\/?page_id=9435"},"modified":"2025-01-07T11:52:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T16:52:49","slug":"undergraduate-travel-grants","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/math\/undergraduate-travel-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate Travel Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">The Department of Mathematics and Statistics can provide funds to a limited number of undergraduate <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">students each year to support travel to, and participation in, conferences and workshops. Students from <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">underrepresented groups are strong encouraged to apply for these funds.<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\"> <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">In deciding whether to honor <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">a request for travel support, the Director of Undergraduate <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Studies will consult with the student\u2019s advisor or mentor, whose support for the proposed conference <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">participation will be of paramount importance. In addition, priority will be given to: (i) more advanced <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">students, particularly those who are nearing the completion of their degree and will soon be applying for <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">jobs and\/or graduate school; (ii) students who will be presenting a paper, presenting a poster, or serving <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">on a panel at the conference they plan to attend; and (iii) students who have already obtained partial <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">support from other sources, or who have at least made an effort to obtain such support, for example by <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">applying to the organization running the conference as in the case of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.org\/programs\/travel-grants\/undergrad-tg\">AMS Student Travel Grants<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">. A decision by the Director of Undergraduate Studies to award a travel <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">grant is subject to review by the Chair of the Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Application Process<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">If you would like to apply for such a travel grant then please send an email to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/math\/people\/faculty-administrative-positions\/\">Director of Undergraduate Studies<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">, supplying the information requested below.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Name of applicant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Name and contact information of advisor or mentor. If your primary mentor is not a faculty member <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">in the BU Department of Mathematics and Statistics, please also include the name of a faculty <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">member in our department that we can contact for any further information that is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Title, dates, and location of the conference or workshop the applicant wishes to attend, together with <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">a link to the conference website, if available.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">A brief personal statement, eg 1-2 paragraphs, explaining how attendance at this conference or <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">workshop would benefit the applicant\u2019s academic and\/or professional development.<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\"> <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">This could in<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">clude, but is not limited to, the role the applicant will have (eg presenting a poster or paper), the <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">prospect of interacting with other participants at the conference, or meeting colleagues to continue <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">a collaboration that was begun at an REU.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Approximate anticipated costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">Portion of the costs which the applicant hopes to cover by external sources, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.org\/programs\/travel-grants\/undergrad-tg\">AMS Student Travel Grants <\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">mentioned above.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Resources for finding conferences and workshops<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">A number of organizations post listings of conferences and workshops that might be of interest to under<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">graduates. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">The two main general mathematics meetings are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/\/jmm\">Joint Mathematics Meetings<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\"> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/meetings\/mathfest\">MAA MathFest<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">, both of which contain events for students.<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\"> <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">You can find additional confer<\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">ence listings on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.org\/home\/page\">AMS<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/\">MAA<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">, and <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.siam.org\/\">SIAM<\/a> <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">websites.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">The main general statistics meeting is the <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.amstat.org\/meetings\/jsm\/2025\/index.cfm\">Joint Statistical Meeting<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">, and you can find additional information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amstat.org\/\">American Statistical Association website<\/a><\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">There are a variety of organizations that run special meetings, or events within the larger meetings <\/span><span role=\"presentation\" dir=\"ltr\">mentioned above, specifically for students from underrepresented groups.
