The program prepares students for positions in the fields of education or industry, or for future graduate study leading to a PhD.<\/span> Students graduating with an MS in Statistics are expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of probability theory, mathematical statistics, and stochastic processes.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the ability to apply linear and generalized linear models to data and interpret the results.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate knowledge over a range of topics selected from probability theory, statistical methods, or computation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Degree Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The requirements for obtaining an MS in Statistics can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/mathematics-statistics\/ma-statistics\/\">associated page of the BU Bulletin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elective courses<\/strong>: The three elective courses mentioned on the BU Bulletin page can be chosen from the courses numbered MA 500 and above. You can find more information about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/math\/graduate\/courses-and-registration\/\">graduate courses we offer here<\/a>. Students can also request to use courses from other departments to satisfy these requirements. Please contact your advisor for more information about which courses can be used in this way.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Core Competency Requirement: <\/b>Students in the MS in Statistics program must demonstrate competency in probability, statistical theory, and applied statistics. Prior to the 2025\/2026 academic year, they are required to do so by passing the MA Comprehensive Exams.
